Skyhawks Take B and C Doubles Titles at Stonehill Doubles Invitational

Drzal/Brosnan win B bracket, while Whitcomb/Sanders win C bracket

EASTON, Mass. (September 11, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's tennis team hosted its annual Doubles Invitational and had two of its four doubles pairings win their brackets in the event held over the weekend at Charles Watt Tennis Courts.

Stonehill's No. 3 doubles pairing of junior Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and sophomore Will Brosnan (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) won the B-Doubles bracket by posting an 8-4 victory over Chris Brosnan, Will's older brother, and Rich Degregoris from College of the Holy Cross. Drzal and Brosnan advanced to the final by defeating Eastern Nazarene College's Davis Streelman and Tyler Perron, 8-1, in the quarterfinals and then Justin Danielewicz and Kyle Beynor from Springfield College in the semifinals, 8-6.

Stonehill's fourth doubles pairing of senior Taylor Whitcomb (Round Top, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) and junior Jon Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) won the C-Doubles bracket with an 8-5 decision over the Eastern Nazarene tandem of Kevin Paterno and Andres Biondi. Whitcomb and Sanders posted an 8-3 victory over Cody Rodrigues and Josh Robinson from Springfield in the quarterfinals and then swept Assumption College's Zach Slepchuck and Casey Hodor, 8-0 in the semis.

Stonehill's No. 2 doubles team of senior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and sophomore Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) fell to Southern New Hampshire University's Mitch Dobek and Mike Wallace, the fourth-ranked doubles team in the ITA/East Regional rankings, 8-2 in the A-Doubles Championship. Hyzak and Klados opened with an 8-2 victory over Viljami Rahnasto and Mike Breen from Assumption in the quarterfinals and then edged Springfield's Joe Giannelli and Tanner DeVaremes 9-8 (10-6) in the semifinals.

Senior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and junior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) posted an 8-2 win over Eastern Nazarene's Sam McKay and Nick Thompson in the A Doubles quarterfinals before being defeated by SNHU's Dobek and Wallace, 8-5 in the semis.

Stonehill (0-0, 0-0 NE-10) opens its fall dual match schedule on Friday when it hosts Holy Cross for a non-conference clash at Watt Courts at 4:30 p.m.
