Tiffin Defeats Stonehill, 5-3

Senior Tim Fayed picked up wins at first singles and doubles for the Skyhawks on Wednesday.

Fayed a double-winner for Skyhawks in tight non-conference clash

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 16, 2011) – Tiffin University won a tight 5-3 decision over Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent ITA East Regional rankings, in non-conference men's tennis action at Star Island Resort today. Four of the six singles matches went to three sets, with four sets decided by tiebreakers, and two of three doubles matches were separated by just a break.

Sophomore Brian Coffman (Akron, Ohio) and freshman Craig Martin (Chardon, Ohio) were double-winners for Tiffin, who won two of three doubles matches and then closed the match out with three singles triumphs. Coffman defeated Stonehill sophomore Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles after combining with freshman Robert Ball (Bellefontaine, Ohio) for an 8-6 win at second doubles. Martin posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Skyhawks freshman Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) after teaming up with sophomore Leonid Vladimirov (Vsevolozsh, Russia) for an 8-6 win at third doubles.

Senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was a double-winner for Stonehill, combining with Martin for an 8-4 win at first doubles and then grinding out a 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Tiffin sophomore Luiz Carvalho (Camp Grande, Brazil). Senior Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) also notched a singles win, rallying to defeat Ball, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 8-6.

Stonehill (5-3, 1-1 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow when it rounds out its spring break schedule against the University of Indianapolis here at Star Island Resort at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks next schedule home game is Saturday, March 26, when it hosts Saint Michael's College at noon. Tiffin (4-5, 0-1 GLIAC) faces Adelphi University tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
