Roberts Wesleyan Tops Men’s Soccer, 4-3

Carroll netted his first-career goal

Tubbs tallied his first goal of the season and fourth goal of his career

EASTON, Massachusetts (October 2, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team was able to score three goals, but Roberts Wesleyan College saw Dylan Ruiz put in four tallies for a 4-3 victory Wednesday afternoon on Skyhawk Field in non-conference play.

Stonehill (3-5) saw freshman Brandon Carroll, senior Trevor Tubbs, and sophomore Ian Pereira with the goals, while Eben Degbor and Keegan Nutt tallied the assists on Pereira's goal. In net, senior Billy Troast recorded eight saves in his season debut.

The first half so even play, as Roberts Wesleyan just edged the Skyhawks in shots, 7-6. Following an attack by the Redhawks, where Terrell Spencer struck the ball into the left side of the cage for their third shot of the game, Stonehill saw their first key moment as Stonehill saw their second shot on goal by Ryan Chieffo at 16:21. Chieffo collected a ball from Carroll, as he shot the ball from inside the 18-yard box, but Joe McNulty was there to scoop the shot.

Eleven minutes into the second half, the Redhawks answered first as Jaheed Loblack sent the ball low from the right wing inside the box, as Ruiz knocked the ball into the net for a 1-0 advantage at 56:26. Stonehill was able to take the ball downfield without interruption by the Redhawks until Nutt lobbed the ball into the box as a defender touched it and Carroll was able to tip the ball past the keeper to tie the game, 1-1, at 4:09.

Stonehill found the back of the net once more at 70:04 as Tubbs received a pass from Pereira after a turnover in their attacking third to see their first lead of the game, 2-1. Less than a minute later Ruiz netted his third for a hat trick at 70:50 off a penalty kick, putting the Redhawks up one, 3-2.  A little over two minutes later, Roberts Wesleyan tied the game, 2-2, as a free ball from Terrell Spencer found Dan Reger and then Ruiz sent the ball in for his second goal of the game at 72:39.

Two minutes later Stonehill saw its sixth corner kick of the game, and Nutt sent the ball in as Degbor headed it and Pereira chipped the ball in to tie the game once again at 74:10. Roberts Wesleyan was persistent, as Ruiz was unstoppable once again sending it to the back of the net off a pass from Juan Ospina-Betancurt at 78:15.

The Skyhawks will host the University of New Haven on Saturday, October 5 for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup, as Stonehill will honor its nine seniors before the 11:00 a.m. start on Skyhawk Field.
