Men’s Soccer Earns First NE10 Win, 2-1, Over Saint Anselm

Pereira scores his first-career goal

Hoglund tallied his second-career game-winning goal in the Skyhawks first NE10 win of the season

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (September 25, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team earned its first Northeast-10 Conference victory with a 2-1 win over Saint Anselm College on Wednesday night on Melucci Field.

Stonehill (3-3, 1-1 NE10) saw sophomore Ian Pereira with his first-career goal, while senior Mackenzie Hoglund recorded his second-career game-winning goal and his second goal of the season. Freshman Andrew Hammersley tallied his first NE10 victory with six saves, while Daniel Pereira notched his first-career assist helping his brother with the goal.

The Skyhawks saw an early opportunity as Luke Fuller struck the ball towards the right upper 90 as the Hawks' Jacob Rostkowski picked up his first save of the game. Stonehill also saw multiple breaks throughout the first half, as Saint Anselm was called for 10 fouls, compared to the Skyhawks' six. Late in the first half, Stonehill took the ball down the right side of the field as Daniel served the ball to the six-yard box, where his brother Ian was to knock the ball in as he came running in for a quick one touch for a 1-0 advantage at 35:54.

Following an offside call on Saint Anselm 12 minutes into the second half, Stonehill capitalized and took the ball from their defensive zone to their attacking third, as Ryan Chieffo set up Hoglund before he dribbled past a defender and booted the ball from about 25 yards out. Hoglund found the back of the net at 57:50 for his sixth goal of his career and second of the season. Ten minutes before the end of regulation, Saint Anselm took advantage of a defensive miscue as Quenten McDonough took the ball around defenders to chip it past Hammersley to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. The Skyhawks fended off the Hawks to hold on to the lead as Saint Anselm outshot the Skyhawks 19-8 throughout the game.

The Skyhawks will travel to New Haven, Connecticut to face Southern Connecticut State University no Saturday, September 28 for a kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
