Nutt Scores Golden Goal in Double Overtime Against Saint Anselm College, 1-0

Nutt registers his second-career game-winning goal

Fuller tallied his first-collegiate assist

EASTON, Massachusetts (October 17, 2018) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team got past Saint Anselm College (0-10-2, 0-8-2 NE10) with its fifth shutout of the season in a 1-0 double overtime victory on Wednesday afternoon on Skyhawk Field in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Stonehill (6-6-1, 5-5-0 NE10) saw Keegan Nutt (Easton, Massachusetts/Oliver Ames) tally his second-career game-winning goal and fifth goal of the season, while Luke Fuller (Rehoboth, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) chipped in his first-collegiate assist and Billy Troast (Pompton Plains, New Jersey/Pequannock Township) recorded six saves in his third shutout of his career.

The Skyhawks saw an early shot by Ryan Chieffo (North Haven, Connecticut/North Haven) at the top of the 18-yard box on the right hand side of the box that was sent wide right past the post at 2:35. The Hawks responded with a shot of their own at 6:41 from Zach Elliot that was fronted by Troast, as Elliot found an opening from the left corner of the box. Stonehill saw two corners in less than a minute, but both were punched out by the Hawks, while they then took the ball to their attacking third to launch their own corner in the 25th minute. Stonehill cleared that opportunity and later saw another try of its own, as Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) headed the ball into the keeper's hands after a long free kick from Chieffo in the 40th minute. Both goalkeepers recorded another save before time expired in the first half for two saves a piece.

Troast tallied six saves in his third-career shutout

In the second half, Stonehill saw six free kick opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on any of them while Saint Anselm saw four of their own. Troast tallied three of his saves in the second half, while the Hawks' Jacob Rostkowski notched two saves.

Stonehill saw the first shot on goal in the first overtime as Chieffo launched a free kick from 25 yards out after Saint Anselm was handed a yellow card. His shot was caught by Rostkowski at the front right post for his fifth save of the game. Both teams continued to strike shots and the Hawks saw the second shot on goal as Nick Heckt ripped one at Troast who caught it right before time expired.

In the second overtime, Trevor Tubbs (Northridge, California/Crespi Carmelite) ripped a shot that was blocked by Saint Anselm's defense and both teams continued to fight to bring the ball into their attacking third. Finally after a throw in from Patrick Doherty (West Milford, New Jersey/Saint Joseph Regional) to the right corner, Tubbs forced the defense to boot the ball to the middle of the field where Fuller was located. The freshman found Nutt to the left of him about 25 yards out at the left corner of the 18-yard box and struck the ball with his left foot to the back of the net just past the diving keeper at 108:51.

Stonehill will travel to West Haven, Connecticut to face the University of New Haven (2-10-1, 2-6-1 NE10) for a night game on Saturday, October 20 with a start time of 7:00 p.m.
