Men’s Soccer Earns Fourth Shutout Against Bentley, 4-0

Troast helps Skyhawks to fourth shutout of the season

Nutt registered two goals for his first two-goal game

EASTON, Massachusetts (October 10, 2018) –The Stonehill College men's soccer team rallied past Northeast-10 Conference foe Bentley University, 4-0, Wednesday night at W.B. Mason Field, for their first win against the Falcons since 2014 when the Skyhawks won 1-0.

Stonehill (5-5-1, 4-4-0 NE10) saw Ryan Chieffo and Stephen Vercollone tally one goal, while Keegan Nutt registered two goals. Michael McShane and Chieffo, chipped in the helpers, while junior Billy Troast recorded six saves and his second shutout of his career.

Right off the bat, Stonehill was able to bring the ball into their offensive third multiple times, as Bentley was unable to hold possession for very long in the first half. The Falcon's Kyle Archambault struck the ball just about 15 yards out sending it just past the right front post for an early opportunity in the 14th minute. Stonehill fought back but was called offsides and Bentley put pressure on the Skyhawks with back-to-back corner kicks that were punched out by the defensive wall. At 23:47, McShane dropped off a pass to Chieffo up the middle of the field, and Chieffo pulled the trigger putting the ball to the back right post for a 1-0 lead. Chieffo notched his second of the season and third career goal, while McShane tallied his first assist of his career.

Bentley was able to continue driving the ball into their attacking third, however, Stonehill's defense stood its ground as Troast tallied one save that was a jump save punching the ball over the crossbar and the Falcons totaled five corners in the first half.

Chieffo tallied his first three-point game, as he notched his third goal and fifth assist of his career

In the second half, Stonehill got off its second corner of the game, as Chieffo sent an outswinger past the six-yard box and Nutt was able to collect the punch for a put back towards the back right post for a two-goal advantage at 57:26, 2-0. The Skyhawks were quick to try and set up another play, but they were halted by the Falcons as a short free kick was dropped off to Stonehill's runner but the shot was sent high in the 65th minute.

Bentley had a series of their own opportunities in the second frame, as they totaled five corner kicks and six shots. After a foul and yellow card on the Falcons' Uzoemezie Edozie, Stonehill's Nutt connected on the free kick opening from about 25 yards out that dropped right behind the goalkeeper's head for a three-goal advantage at 85:22, 3-0. About three minutes later, Vercollone chipped in his own contribution, as he dribbled the ball a couple of times after he took control of it after a turnover by Bentley, for the fourth-goal of the game, 4-0. The senior let it bounce once as the goalkeeper charged forward and he lifted it over the diving keeper for his second goal of the season and fourth of his career at 88:20.

Stonehill travels to Colchester, Vermont to take on NE10 Conference foe Saint Michael's College on Saturday, October 13 with an 11:00 a.m. start time.
