Southern Connecticut Scores Late Goal to Defeat Men’s Soccer, 1-0

Hoglund tallies two shots in the loss

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 20, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team fell to Southern Connecticut State University, 1-0, in the final minutes of the game Wednesday night at Jess Dow Field in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Stonehill's (4-3-1, 1-2-0 NE10) Conor McDonough (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) recorded eight saves on the night.

Southern Connecticut State University's (4-1-1, 2-0-1 NE10) saw L. Greenway-Tambini score his fifth-season goal, while Sabri Akter tallied the assist. Noah Varonier notched two saves in the win.

Southern Connecticut took control of most of the first half, as the Owls tallied seven shots to Stonehill's three.

With a foul 40 yards out in the 30th minute of the game, Southern Connecticut took the free kick, but was caught by McDonough right outside the six-yard box. The Owls continued to pressure the Skyhawks after the foul to keep the ball in their offensive zone for the remainder of the half, except for a strong strike by Ryan Chieffo (North Haven, Connecticut/North Haven) with the left foot in the 44th minute for a diving save by the Owls.

The first 15 minutes of the second half totaled six fouls between the two teams and four shots by Southern Connecticut. Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) had an opportunity in the 70th minute to launch the ball from about 30 yards away, but the ball sailed high above the cross bar.

The Owls had back-to-back corner kicks in the 80th minute and was only able to get off one shot, which was saved by McDonough.

In the 88th minute, Southern Connecticut's Akter sent a cross from the right side, which was deflected but picked up by Greenway-Tambini who slotted it in the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage. The Skyhawks couldn't stop the Owls, as they brought the ball back to their offensive third and recorded three more shots in the remaining minutes of the game.

Stonehill hosts Southern New Hampshire University on Skyhawk Field on Saturday, September 23 with an 11:00 a.m. start time for its next NE10 game.
