Men’s Soccer Gets Ahead Early, But Falls to Daemen, 3-2

Hoglund tallies first-career goal

EASTON, Mass. (September 4, 2017) – The Stonehill men's soccer team scored two goals in the first half to get ahead, 2-1, but Daemen College notched two in the second frame for a 3-2 victory Monday afternoon on Skyhawk Field.

Stonehill (1-1-1) saw sophomore Mackenzie Hoglund (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) and junior Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) register their first-career goals. Adam Branco (Naugatuck, Connecticut/Naugatuck) and Michael Fraioli (Scotia, New York/Scotia-Glenville) recorded the helpers for the Skyhawks.

Daemen (1-2) saw Kristian Aadnoy score twice and Finn Krueger tally the game-winning goal, while Nik Ringdahl Bohlin assisted two of the three goals.

Possession toggled between the two teams for the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Wildcats were able to get off two shots on goal, including one save where the Skyhawks' Connor McDonough (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) extended for the ball in the second minute of the game. Daemen College's Noah Keem recorded a yellow card, but the Wildcats quickly regained possession in the 12th minute of the game, as Ronfdahl Bohlin dribbled the ball up the middle of the field where he was able to find Aadnoy who challenged McDonough and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Stonehill took a corner kick and kept the ball in their offensive third, as Branco ran the ball up the right side of the field and gave it to Hoglund who placed the ball to the left of the goalkeeper's reach, knotting the game in the 16th minute, 1-1.

The Skyhawks acted once more in the first half in the 30th minute as Vercollone recorded his first-collegiate goal. Fraioli collected the ball after Connor O'Brien (Schenectady, New York/Guilderland Central) shot it and hit the post, and then Fraioli found Vercollone on inside the box on the left side to finish the play in the bottom right corner of the net for a one-goal advantage, 2-1. In the final 20 minutes of the first half, Stonehill outshot Daemen, 5-1.

The second half began with a shot by James O'Shea (Quincy, Massachusetts/Quincy), but it was blocked by the Wildcats. In the 60th minutes of the game, Branco connected with a header, but he drove it into the ground while he was in the box and it bounced over the net. Soon after, Daemen's Samuel Lockman sent the ball towards the net, but it hit the right post and ricocheted to the left, for Aadnoy to collect the rebound and put the ball in the back of the net to knot the game, 2-2, in the 62nd minute.

With the two teams battling back and forth for the remaining time in the second frame, the Wildcats were finally able to connect on a through ball by Ringdahl Bohlin in the 88th minute. Krueger trapped the pass and challenged McDonough by making him lay out, and the Wildcat tipped the ball into the back of the net for Daemen's first lead of the game, 3-2. Stonehill had two final opportunities in the final minutes of the game, but could not capitalize, falling to the Wlidcats, 3-2.

The Skyhawks will host Roberts Wesleyan College on Thursday, September 7 for a 7:30 p.m. match, which will be held at W.B. Mason Stadium.
