Skyhawks forced to play from behind entire match
EASTON, Mass. (October 26, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team allowed two goals in the opening 17 minutes of play, before dropping a 2-1 contest to visiting Assumption College today in Northeast-10 action at Skyhawk Field. Prior to the start of the match, Stonehill honored its three seniors in their second-to-last home match as Skyhawks. Kevin Gilmartin (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock), Timothy Canniff (Billerica, Mass./Billerica), and Kevin Beckley (Congers, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) were each recognized for their contributions to the Stonehill soccer program.
Assumption, which came into today's match winless since capturing the inaugural Catholic Cup at Skyhawk Field on September 7th, jumped on Stonehill with a goal just five minutes into the match. Junior midfielder Alex Parisi (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) connected on a cross with sophomore midfielder Nemanja Kaurin (South Portland, Maine/South Portland), and Kaurin scored on a header to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead.
Assumption would double its advantage at the 16:38 mark, when senior back Lucas Spina (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) found junior midfielder Troy Lamagna (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Greyhounds.
Stonehill was able to get on the board before halftime, as junior forward Cam McDonough (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) bounced a free kick into the penalty area, and junior midfielder Will Miller (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Shoreham-Wading River) came up with the ball and beat Assumption goalkeeper Dana King (Windham, Maine/Windham) to reduce Stonehill's deficit to one.
The Skyhawks were unable to rally further in the second half, as King preserved the 2-1 score for the Greyhounds. In the loss, junior captain Adam Colella (Wilmington, Mass./St. John's Prep) made six saves for the Skyhawks.
Stonehill (4-9-1, 3-7-1 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday, when the Skyhawks wrap up their 2013 home slate with a match against Saint Michael's College. Assumption (3-8-2, 1-8-2 NE-10) hosts the University of New Haven on Wednesday afternoon in NE-10 competition.
