Skyhawks end five-game skid with comeback victory

EASTON, Mass. (October 12, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team utilized two goals late in the second half to earn a thrilling 2-1 comeback win today over the visiting University of New Haven Chargers in Northeast-10 action at Skyhawk Field.

New Haven pulled ahead just 12 and a half minutes into the match, when freshman midfielder Oscar Johannesson (Hasslehold, Sweden/Hassleholms Tekniska Skola) one-timed a pass from sophomore midfielder Bobby Cruz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Centereach) past Stonehill goalkeeper Adam Colella (Wilmington, Mass./St. John's Prep) to give the Chargers a 1-0 advantage.

The Stonehill offense remained quiet through the majority of the match, until the Skyhawks struck back with the equalizer in the 79th minute. Junior midfielder Zane Stanton (Dartmouth, Mass./St. Sebastian's) beat New Haven goalkeeper James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) with a header directly off a long free kick from sophomore back Evan Devanny (Concord, N.H./Concord) to even the score at one.

Stonehill kept the pressure on the New Haven defense, and came up with the go-ahead goal just over three minutes later when senior captain Kevin Gilmartin (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) found freshman forward Alec Borowsky (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) for the first tally of his career.

Stonehill (4-7-0, 3-5-0 NE-10) returns to action this Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. against Merrimack College in the Skyhawks' 2013 Purple & White Game. New Haven (1-9-1, 1-6-0 NE-10), which has now lost four consecutive matches, plays this Wednesday as well, as the Chargers head to Garden City, N.Y. to take on Adelphi in Northeast-10 action.
