Saint Thomas Aquinas edges Stonehill, 2-1, in 2OT

Skyhawks suffer season opening loss

EASTON, Mass. (September 2, 2011) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team dropped its 2011 season opener against Saint Thomas Aquinas, 2-1 in double overtime, on Friday afternoon in non-conference action at Skyhawk Field in front of 125 fans.

Trailing 1-0 in the in the final moments of the second half, junior Stephen Hugel (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) corralled a loose ball at the top right corner of the box and launched a desperation shot over Spartans goaltender Andrew Tartara (Bardonia, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) into the left corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1 at the 89:59 mark.

Sophomore midfielder Daniel Davren (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet) responded for Saint Thomas Aquinas late in the second overtime heading home the game-winner on a beautiful cross by teammate Kurt Schuler (Tuxedo, N.Y./Monroe) past Skyhawks netminder Eric Schott (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy).

The Spartans got on the board first in the 79th minute of the contest as Davren's long throw in was deflected into the back of the net by a Stonehill back.

The Skyhawks outshot Saint Thomas Aquinas, 13-10, and registered two corners.

In net, Tartara made five stops while Schott turned away three shots on goal.

The Skyhawks (0-1, 0-0 NE-10) return to action tomorrow, at home, against Concordia (N.Y.) with game time scheduled for 2 p.m. The Spartans (1-0, 0-0 ECC) travel to Saint Anselm on Sunday, September 4 at 1 p.m.
