Own goal spells doom for Skyhawks in key NE-10 matchup

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 10, 2009) - A costly own goal saw Stonehill College drop a 1-0 decision to Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at Melucci Field this afternoon.

The lone scoring in the match game at the 67:07 mark when a miscommunication in front of the Stonehill goal resulted in junior defender Kevin Moroney (Medway, Mass./Medway) accidently tapping the ball past junior goalkeeper Brandon McFarlane (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy).            

Freshman Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor, N.H./Moultonborough Academy) posted nine saves to make the goal stand for Saint Anselm for his second shutout of the season. McFarlane made eight saves for Stonehill, with six coming in the second half. Stonehill finished with a 15-13 advantage in shots for the match. The Skyhawks (10) and Hawks (9) combined for 19 shots in a wide-open second half.

Stonehill (7-5-1, 3-5-1 NE-10) is off again until next Saturday when it visits Franklin Pierce University at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Wednesday, October 21, to host Assumption College at 3:30 p.m. Saint Anselm (4-7-2, 4-4-1 NE-10) visits Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
