Easton, Mass. – In their highest scoring output in two
years, the Skyhawks put five on the board including three in a ten
minute span to beat the Mercy Mavericks 5-2 at Skyhawk Field on
Tuesday.
Stonehill came out strong in the early going but it was Mercy who
struck first, as Raldino Powell scored on a corner kick by Mike
Fernandez in the 15th minute.
The Skyhawks would respond 20 minutes later, as freshman
Mark Bolster (Narragansett, R.I.), scored his
third goal of the season off a rebound in front of the net to even
the game at one.
Stephen Day (North Haven, Conn.) gave Stonehill a
lead they wouldn’t relinquish in the 40th minute as he tapped
home a cross from Michael Bridges (Sandwich,
Mass.) for the 2-1 lead.
Only a minute later a Mercy foul inside the box gave the Skyhawks
a penalty kick, which David Pohl (Bridgewater,
Mass.) nailed home for his first goal of the season and a 3-1 lead
going into the half.
Stonehill led off the scoring in the second half, when sophomore
Ethan Bates (Madison, Conn.) scored on a shot from
right inside the 18.
Mercy responded in the 67th minute on Fernandez shot from the
right side of the 18. Five minutes later Martin
Early (Winterport, Maine) ended the scoring, as he tapped
in a header by sophomore Todd Shigo (Naples,
Maine).
Keeper Brandon McFarlane (Norwich, Conn.) had
nine saves in net for the Skyhawks as they improve to 3-4-1 on the
season.
Stonehill returns to action on Saturday, October 4, when they play
host to St. Michael’s at 11:00 am.
