LOWELL, Mass.-- Junior Edens Chery (Brockton, Mass.) notched a goal and an assist as UMass Lowell used four goals in a 10-plus minute span early in the second half to post a 5-2 Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer victory over Stonehill Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field.

The host River Hawks (7-4-5, 5-3-5 Northeast-10) trailed 2-1 before senior Andrew Doherty (Malden, Mass.) converted a Chery pass in the 52nd minute to even matters at 2-2, and Chery netted what proved to be the game-winner just 3:04 later on a feed from senior Christian Figueroa (North Andover, Mass.) to give UMass Lowell the lead for good. Markers by freshman Brendan Horne (Swansea, Mass.) in the 58th minute, set up by Chery's second assist, and Figueroa in the 62nd minute on a pass from sophomore Tim Bengston (Andover, Mass.) closed out the scoring on the day.

UMass Lowell had taken a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute on senior Michael Cafeteiro's (Dracut, Mass.) unassisted goal, but the visiting Skyhawks (7-11, 3-10 Northeast-10) evened matters in the 36th minute when sophomore Austin Matte (Merrimack, N.H.) converted a pass from freshman Shaun Keeley (Woburn, Mass.) to net his first collegiate goal and forge a 1-1 tie at the break. Freshman T.J. Capecelatro (Orange, Conn.) gave Stonehill a 2-1 edge just 4:01 after intermission when he tallied his first collegiate marker on an assist from junior Joey Silva (Brockton, Mass.), setting up the River Hawks' four qoal sequence over that next 11-plus minute span.

Freshman Ryan Richards (Holden, Mass.) picked up the win without making a save in goal for UMass Lowell in 74-plus minutes of action, while junior Alex Ricker (Sudbury, Mass.) played the 15-plus minutes in net for the hosts without being called upon to make a save as well. Freshman Brian Guerrini (Glastonbury, Conn.) made five saves in goal on the day for Stonehill as the River Hawks outshot the Skyhawks by a 14-5 margin.

UMass Lowell clinched a spot in the upcoming Northeast-10 playoffs and will take play a quarterfinal round contest Tuesday afternoon. Stonehill closed out its 2006 slate with its highest overall win total in seven seasons this fall.
