NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.-- Senior Joseph Sousa's (Shelton, Conn.) penalty kick conversion in the 55th minute of play held up as the game-winner in lifting Stonehill to a 1-0 non-league college men's soccer victory over New Haven in opening round play of the 2006 Merrimack Invitational Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.
The two teams played a scoreless first half before Sousa netted his game-winner for the Skyhawks, who at 4-3 overall have already matched their entire victory total of last season. Freshman Brian Guerrini (Glastonbury, Conn.) made that stand up in goal for Stonehill by making eight saves to pick up his second career victory and first collegiate shutout.
Sophomore James Hilaire (Stamford, Conn.) made nine stops in net for the Chargers (2-5) as Stonehill outshot New Haven by a slim 10-9 margin for the match.
Stonehill squares off with Concordia (N.Y.) in second round action of the Merrimack Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field beginning at 1:00 p.m., while New Haven tangles with host Merrimack in Sunday's other second round match that begins at 3:30 p.m.
