David Borges is in his eighth year as head coach of the Stonehill ice hockey program. He joined the coaching staff, first as an assistant coach, after a 26 year coaching association with the boy’s ice hockey team at Coyle & Cassidy High School in nearby Taunton, Mass., the last nine years as varsity head coach.

Borges assisted the 2019-20 team to a turnaround season, as they won their third NE10 Tournament Championship after the Skyhawks finished third in regular season play. The Purple & White finished the season with a 13-11-5 overall record and an 8-6-4 NE10 mark for its best records since 2015-16. Stonehill saw three NE10 All-Conference nods as Matthew Schoen '19 and Cameron Wright '19 were named to the first time, while Brendan Nehmer '23 earned All-Rookie Team honors. Schoen was also named the NE10 Goaltender of the Year, for the Skyhawks' fourth honoree. Schoen, Wright, and Ryan Meade '19 were named to the NE10 All-Tournament Team, while Schoen was voted the NE10 Most Outstanding Player, the program's second MVP. 

The 2018-19 season saw an 8-17-1 overall record and a 3-11-1 NE10 record. Senior Billy Palmer '19 received the Fr. John McCarthy, C.S.C Stonehill Leadership Award. Palmer also tallied a career high 57 saves against Saint Michael's College on February 6, 2019 to become the NE10 career saves record holder with 2,560 saves. 

In his fifth year, Borges led the 2017-18 team to a 7-16-2 overall mark and a 5-9-1 NE10 Conference record. The sqaud finished fifth in the conference, just shyly missing playoffs. Freshman Sean Conley '21 was the only Skyhawk to be selected for post season awards. He was named to the All-Rookie and All-Conference second team as a defenseman. 

Borges guided the team to the fourth-consecutive year in the NE10 Tournament in the 2016-17 season, finishing the season with a 9-14-4 overall record and a 5-2-1 mark in conference play. Freshman Conor Cassidy '20 was named to the NE10 All-Rookie Team. 

The 2015-16 season gave Borges another decorated season, as the team finished 13-9-4 overall and 7-1-2 in NE10 play, clinching its third-straight regular season title and capturing its second NE10 Championship title in program history. Four players were given NE10 All-Conference recognition, including Garrett White '16 who was the lone Skyhawk on the first team. Thomas DePoalo '16 and Brendan White '18 garnered second team recognition, as Billy Palmer '19 was named NE10 Rookie of the Year, as well as being placed on the second team. 

Borges led Stonehill to a share of its second consecutive NE-10 regular season title in 2014-15, earning Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his career. Stonehill, which was picked to finish third in the NE-10 Preseason Coaches Poll, went 14-6-4 overall and 8-0-2 in conference play. Borges picked up his first NE10 Coach of the Year award, as he saw six student-athletes receive All-NE10 honors. Chris Tasiopoulos '15 was named NE10 Goaltender of the Year for the second-consecutive season and a spot on the All-NE10 first team, where he was joined by Robbie Dorgan '16 and Brendan Greene '15. Travis Army '16 garnered All-NE10 second team, while Brendan White '18 was named NE10 Rookie of the Year and placed on the All-Rookie team along with Tommy Newton '18.

Since taking charge of the ice hockey program four days prior to the start of the 2013-14 campaign, Borges has guided Stonehill through two of its most successful seasons in program history. The Skyhawks have gone 30-16-4 overall (.640), while posting a remarkable 19-0-2 (.952) record in NE-10 play. Last season, Borges led Stonehill to its first regular season conference championship in program history with an 11-0 mark in league play. The Skyhawks finished with a 16-10 record overall, matching the single-season record for wins set in 1976-77, and posting a program-best ten game winning streak in the process. Over the last two seasons, Borges has coached ten All-Conference selections, led by senior Chris Tasiopoulos, who earned consecutive NE-10 Goaltender of the Year awards.

David helped them reach their potential and accomplish achievements that had not been done previously in the history of the program. I am thrilled to watch our program continue to flourish in the coming seasons under his leadership.”

Borges took over the program’s leadership in an interim basis four days before Stonehill’s 2013-14 season-opener at Southern New Hampshire University, guiding Stonehill to the first Northeast-10 Conference regular season championship in program history with a sterling 11-0 record in league play. The Skyhawks finished with a 16-10 record overall, matching the single-season record for wins set in 1976-77, and posting a program-best ten game winning streak in the process. Stonehill’s record streak started with a 2-0 non-conference win at Becker College on January 15 and went through the end of the regular season when it claimed a 6-2 triumph over Assumption College on February 20.

“I am honored to continue to lead the Stonehill ice hockey program," said Borges upon his promotion to head coach. "I have a tremendous passion for this College and its hockey program. Stonehill has an excellent academic reputation and I feel that the potential of this hockey team are endless. I look forward to building the program, where we will strive for both academic and athletic excellence.”

Stonehill saw four student-athletes earn All-Northeast-10 honors in Borges’ first season, with junior Chris Tasiopoulos being named the NE-10 Goaltender of the Year. Tasiopoulos enjoyed a record-breaking season for the Skyhawks, posting a program-record five shutouts and also setting a new career shutout record of six. Senior captain Bryan Rooneyhas also been named a semifinalist for the Joe Concannon Award by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.

Borges, father of Stonehill graduate Dana Borges, ’13, who served as an assistant coach for the Skyhawks this season, came to Stonehill after a 26 year coaching association with the boy’s ice hockey team at Coyle & Cassidy High School in nearby Taunton, Mass., the last nine years as varsity head coach. He led the Warriors to a 121-50-8 (.698) record over his nine seasons as head coach, winning nine straight Eastern Athletic Conference championships and Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) state tournament appearances. Coyle & Cassidy reached the MIAA quarterfinals seven of those nine years, reaching three South Sectional finals and winning the 2006 sectional championship to reach the state final. Borges is a three-time Taunton Daily Gazette Coach of the Year, earning the honors in 2008, 2011 and 2013. Borges was chosen to coach in the first ever Massachusetts High School Hockey All-Star Game in 2010 and also coached in the event in 2011.

Borges served as associate head coach at Coyle & Cassidy for nine years prior to taking over the helm in 2005 and was assistant coach for six years after one year as goaltenders coach in 1987. The Warriors won the 1995 Eastern Massachusetts Championship and reached the Massachusetts State Championship in his first year as associate head coach. Borges has also coached the U-14 Hanover Classics since 2008. He led the team to the 2010-11 Massachusetts Tier II State Championship and competed for the USA Hockey National Championship in Buffalo, N.Y.

Borges is a 1985 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in industrial engineering from its College of Engineering. He is also currently the vice president at Babs Foundry, Inc. Borges resides in Taunton with his wife, Christine, and the couple have two children, Dana and Kylee.
