Varney registers first multi-point and multi-goal game of his career

FOXBORO, Massachusetts (February 8, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team won its second-straight win with a 4-2 victory over Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern New Hampshire University Friday night at Foxboro Sports Center.
For Stonehill, (8-13-1, 3-9-1 NE10), James Varney notched two goals for his first-career multi-point and multi-goal game, while Shamus Maloney and Cameron Wright chipped in tallies as well. Jack Scannell , Seth Murray, Nicholas Godin , Zachary Frament, and Charles Page each saw one assist, as freshman goaltender Chase McKay recorded a career-high 45 saves in his second-career victory.
In the first period, neither team was able to get on the board, but the Penmen saw an 18-8 shot advantage after taking control of most of the first frame.
Eight minutes into the second period, Stonehill saw an opening, as Varney lifted his second goal of the season and third goal of his career into the cage at 8:15 with help from Scannell and Murray, for a 1-0 lead for the Skyhawks. In under three minutes, Stonehill would soon see two more goals to get out to a three-goal lead, 3-0. Wright put in his 11th goal of the season and 23rd of his career at 9:37, while Varney chipped in his third for the season and second of the game at 10:52, putting Stonehill up by three, 3-0. Seconds after the big lead, Stonehill saw the first penalty of the game, but the Penmen weren't able to get past the Skyhawks' defense, as they got off eight shots in the two minute penalty. With about four minutes left in the frame, the Penmen cut the deficit to two, 3-1, as Charlie Davis found the back of the cage at 16:03. Shots were much more even in the second frame, as the Penmen held a slight 13-12 shot advantage in the period.
Stonehill saw two power play opportunities in the third period, with one at 4:34 and one at 12:36. The Skyhawks registered seven total shots in those two power plays, getting no shot to drop in for an added cushion. However, Southern New Hampshire cut the deficit to one, 3-2 with a goal at 19:10 from Max Kent. After pulling their goaltender at 17:55, they took the advantage of an extra skater to score giving them a better opportunity all around. After doing what they planned to do, Stonehill took the puck to their offensive zone and Maloney took a shot to expand the lead to two, 4-2, right before time expired.
Stonehill will host Southern New Hampshire University for its final home game of the season tomorrow, Saturday, February 9 with a 5:10 p.m. puck drop at Foxboro Sports Center and prior to the game, its six seniors will be recognized.
