Maloney Hat Trick Propels Ice Hockey Past Franklin Pierce, 5-1

FOXBORO, Massachusetts (November 17, 2018) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team posted its first victory of the season in a Northeast-10 Conference battle against Franklin Pierce University, as the Skyhawks cruised to a 5-1 win Saturday night at Foxboro Sports Center.

For Stonehill, (1-3-0, 1-2-0 NE10) Shamus Maloney scored three goals for his first-career hat trick and second game of his career with three points. Connor Jewett and Kyle Woodruff also chipped in goals, while Charles Page, Ryan Meade, Connor Collier, and Thomas Mahoney registered an assist each. Senior goaltender Billy Palmer registered 34 saves in his first win of the season and 25th of his career.

Stonehill had the shot advantage in each of the three periods, holding a small advantage in the first, 14-12. Both teams were even strength through the first frame and the Skyhawks were able to get a 2-0 lead with Jewett's second goal of the season, 11th of his career, while Maloney registered his second of the season and 10th of his career. Jewett put Stonehill up 1-0 at 6:46 in the first with helpers from Page and Meade. Maloney's first goal of the game extended the Skyhawks' lead to two, 2-0 at 16:57.


Woodruff scored his first goal of the season and third of his career

Stonehill was able to extend its lead to three, 3-0, with Woodruff's first goal of the season and third of his career at 4:39 in the second period. Franklin Pierce continued to fight back, getting more and more aggressive by the minute. The Ravens were called for the first penalty of the game at 6:05, as the Skyhawks were unsuccessful at capitalizing on the man advantage. Two more penalties were called before Stonehill picked up its fourth goal of the game, 4-0, from Maloney who tallied his second-career power play goal at 11:43.

Franklin Pierce was able to cut the deficit to three, 4-1, with their first goal of the game by Sean Crowley at 6:05 in the third period, as Anthony Nikolopoulos and Cameron Shepardson tallied helpers. Late in the third frame, there was a four-on-four situation and neither team capitalized on the opportunity. Stonehill, however, scored another goal to get the lead back to four, 5-1, as Maloney scored an empty net goal at 19:41 in the third period for his third of the game.

Stonehill will compete in the Steve Hoar Memorial Tournament in Worcester, Massachusetts this weekend, starting with a 12:40 p.m. game against Franklin Pierce University, hosted by Becker College on Saturday, November 24. The Skyhawks will compete in either the consolation game at 1:00 p.m. or the championship game at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 25 at the Fidelity Worcester Ice Center.
