HOOKSETT, New Hampshire (November 13, 2018) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference battle to Southern New Hampshire University Tuesday night at the Ice Den with a score of 4-1.
For Stonehill, (0-3-0, 0-2-0 NE10) Connor Jewett chipped in his third goal of the season and second power-play goal of his career with assists from Colin Quinn and Jack Hall, while freshman Chase McKay appeared in his first game in net recording 28 saves.
Stonehill outshot Southern N.H. 11-8 in the first period, as the Skyhawks won 15 faceoffs to the Penmen's 13. Stonehill came out firing after the initial face off and Southern N.H. was called for the first penalty of the game at 4:33, but the Skyhawks were unable to capitalize as no shots were fired in the penalty. The Penmen were called for their second penalty at 8:50 and the Skyhawks tallied four shots including three in a span of seven seconds. Both teams saw one more penalty before the first period ended, as neither were able to find the back of the net.
Forty three seconds into the second period, the Penmen saw the first shot of the frame by Max Kent that was fired just left of the cage, which bounced off the boards and Jake Cox put back the rebound as Kyle Galloway dished the puck to him for Cox's first goal of the game. Southern N.H. continued slapping the dish at the net, and they ended up cutting the deficit of shots to three, 19-22, but the Penmen's Cox wrapped the puck around McKay's pads after a fake to the left at 9:34 for a 2-0 lead and his second goal of the game with helpers from Galloway and Cole Stewart.
Southern N.H. continued putting pressure on Stonehill throughout the third period, as Cox extended the Penmen's lead with a shorthanded goal at 17:32 with assists from Brett Strawn and Joseph Berardi that came from the right side of the cage. Less than 30-seconds later, Stonehill's Jewett tipped in an initial shot from Quinn from the left side of the cage to cut the deficit to two, 3-1, at 18:00 on a power-play goal. Stonehill pulled McKay with less than two minutes remaining and Southern N.H. capitalized on an empty net opportunity as Andy Somerville won the faceoff in their defensive third and Joe Fiorino chipped the puck to Ryan Spagnoli who sent the dish down the ice for the fourth goal of game, 4-1.
Stonehill will host NE10 foe Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, November 17 at 5:10 p.m. at Foxboro Sports Center.
