Newton recorded his 10th goal of his career
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (December 12, 2016) – Hosting its final contest of 2016, the Stonehill College men's ice hockey team dropped a non-conference matchup against Johnson & Wales University, 4-1, Monday night at the Foxboro Sports Center.
For Stonehill, (3-8-2) Tommy Newton (Hollis, N.H./Portland Pirates – USPHL Premier) tallied his second goal of the season, as goaltender Billy Palmer (Cranston, R.I./Boston Bandits-EHL Premier) recorded 32 saves in the loss.

Johnson & Wales (4-7-2) saw Fran Mackin tally two goals, as Connor Bates and Nicholas Gray netted the other two scores. Tyler Ellor notched 19 saves in net.
Both teams saw four minutes worth of penalties, as the Wildcats were able to capitalize on one of the Skyhawks' penalties in a man-up opportunity late in the third period. Johnson & Wales also saw a 36-20 shot advantage and 36-23 faceoff advantage in the game racking up its four goals.
The first period remained quiet as both teams fought for possession until 13 minutes into the frame. As the Wildcats won a faceoff at 13 minutes, Logan Fortier took a shot wide but Connor Bates and Nicholas Gray were able to set up Mackin for his first goal of the season fiving Johnson & Wales an early 1-0 lead. Stonehill contained Johnson & Wales for the remaining minutes holding a 9-4 shot advantage.
The Wildcats started the second period off with three-straight shots, as Palmer was able to direct them the opposite way. Stonehill regained possession and got off three-straight shots of its own. Around 16 minutes into the frame, Newton was able to gather a lose puck from a wide shot from the Wildcats and skated past defenders to find the back of the cage for his second goal of the season, 1-1. Johnson & Wales picked up its first penalty of the game, and the power play was quickly killed by the Wildcats only giving Stonehill two close opportunities.
Once again, Johnson & Wales kicked off the third period with three-straight shots, but this time the third blew past Palmer for a 2-1 advantage only 43 seconds into the frame. The Wildcats took off once again, as only at 1:08, Gray crashed the cage for his fifth of the season receiving assistance from Mackin and Bates. Once more, at 4:49, Johnson & Wales Mackin capitalized on passes from Michael Mazzotta and Ben Brouillard, as Stonehill was a man down, extending the Wildcats' lead to three, 4-1. Neither team was able to score anymore, as both defensive fences held their ground.
Stonehill heads to winter break and will come back to face Nichols College on Friday, January 6 at 8:40 p.m. in its first game of the Boston Landing Tournament held at Warrior Ice Arena.
