Assumption Slips Past Ice Hockey, 3-2

Cassidy and Hall tally career-first two-point games

WORCESTER, Mass. (December 3, 2016) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team fell, 3-2, to Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College Saturday night at Buffone Arena.

Palmer made a career-high 49 saves

For Stonehill, (3-5-2, 1-3-0 NE10) Conor Cassidy (Wilmington, Del./Canterbury and Kents Hill) and Jack Hall (Shelburne, Vt./Proctor Academy) both recorded career-firsts two-point games (1G, 1A), as goaltender Billy Palmer (Cranston, R.I./Boston Bandits-EHL Premier) registered a career-high 49 saves in the loss.

Assumption (3-8-1, 1-3-0 NE10) saw three different goal scorers, including Paul Amarone, Mike Sorenti and Tommy Mahoney, while goaltender Brian Nazzaro tallied 51 saves in the win.

Stonehill acted early off of the second faceoff of the game as Stonehill went 2-for-2. Hall slapped the puck, as Nazzaro saved it. Cassidy collected the rebound finding the back of the cage taking an early, 1-0 lead 29 seconds into the game.

After, 11 minutes of battling back and forth, Amarone picked up his first power goal with assists from Mac Carnes and Matt Cowles at 11:04.

The Skyhawks 20-16 shot advantage was the difference in the first period as Stonehill regained the lead at 17:10, as Hall tallied his second point off Cassidy and Tommy Newton (Hollis, N.H./Lawrence Academy) helpers. The remainder of the time, Stonehill got off six shots to Assumption's three.

The Greyhounds responded to the Skyhawks early goal in the first period, as they tied the game at two 17 seconds into the second. Robert Roche and Brian Farrell.

Nine minutes later, Mahoney blocked Cassidy's shot and was able to find Amarone who dished it back to Mahoney for the 3-2 lead at 9:15. Stonehill continued to outshoot Assumption 22-19, as the Greyhounds took its first lead of the game.

The third period saw Stonehill killing two power plays as Assumption killed one, totaling 0-for-6 for the Skyhawks and 1-for-6 for the Greyhounds. Assumption held a 17-11 shot advantage in the third period.

Stonehill plays non-conference foe Worcester State University on Thursday, December 8 for an 8:30 pm puck drop at The Hart Center, the home of the College of Holy Cross.
