Salve Regina Handles Stonehill, 5-2


Senior defenseman Scott Rolph scored his first goal of the season and third goal of his career in tonight's defeat.

Portsmouth, R.I. (January 9, 2016) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team lost its fourth-straight contest Saturday night as Salve Regina University defeated the Skyhawks, 5-2, in non-conference action at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink.

Junior forward Jonathan Felteau (Peabody, Massachusetts/Mass Cyclones (ATJHL) led the attack for Salve Regina, registering three points on a goal and two assists, while senior forward Peter Gintoli (Shelton, Connecticut/Bay State Breakers (EJHL) and freshman Shaun Patry (Penfield, New York/Rochester Americans) chipped in two points apiece for the  Seahawks.

For Stonehill, senior Scott Rolph (Bow, New Hampshire/Tilton School) netted his first goal of the season at 11:46 of the first period, placing a shot past Salve goaltender Blake Wojtala (Trenton, Michigan/N.Y. Apple Core) on a nice pass from Anthony D'Elia (Stamford, Connecticut/Gunnery School).

Senior defenseman Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Massachusetts/Southern Maine) opened the scoring at the 05:37 mark in the first period for Salve, receiving a pass from Felteau and Gintoli and potting his fourth goal of the season. Rolph knotted the game up at one goal for Stonehill heading into the first intermission.

The second stanza belonged to Salve Regina, using four unanswered goals by Felteau, Patry, Evan Schmidbauer (San Diego, California/Rio Grand (NAHL) and Tommy Evangelista (Methuen, Massachusetts/Saint Anselm), to push their lead to 5-1 by the end of the period.

Senior Garrett White (Wakefield, Massachusetts/Boston Bulldogs (AJHL) put his name in the score-sheet late in the third period, netting a power play goal with help from senior Richard Harris (Grand Island, New York/Valley Jr. Warriors (EJHL) and classmate Travis Army (Englewood, Colorado/Worcester Academy) closing the scoring on the night at 5-2.

Freshman Goaltender William Palmer (Cranston, Rhode Island/Boston Bandits (EHL) turned away 37 shots while his counterpart, Wojtala, saved 19 for Salve Regina.

Stonehill (4-7-3, 2-0-1 NE-10) travels to Becker College for a Non-conference matchup on Tuesday, January 12 at 7:40 p.m. Salve Regina (8-5-1, 4-2-1 ECAC NE) takes on Elmira College in the Martha's Vineyard Classic on Friday, January 15 at 4:30 p.m.
