Tasiopoulos' 44 saves not enough as Saint Anselm defeats Stonehill

MANCHESTER, N.H. (February 23, 2013) – The Stonehill Skyhawks ice hockey team fell to the first-seeded Saint Anselm Hawks Saturday night in the Northeast-10 Conference semifinal at the Thomas F. Sullivan Arena in Manchester, N.H.

John Hyslip (Andover, Mass/The Tilton School) led the way for Saint A's notching two goals on the evening.  Joe Tebano (Glastonbury, Conn./South Kent), Tim King (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth), Tucker Mullin (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover), and Greg Crovo (Melrose, Mass./Northwood School) also recorded goals for the Hawks.

Junior Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich./Lake Orion) stopped 19 shots to seal the victory for Saint Anselm. Sophomore Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) recorded 44 saves including 20 stops in the second frame. Saint A's outshot Stonehill 50-22.

Freshman Richard Harris (Grand Island, N.Y./The Kent School) notched a goal and an assist for Stonehill in the loss. Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./Canton) also tallied goals for the Skyhawks who are now eliminated from the NE-10 tournament.

Saint Anselm struck first on King's eighth goal of the season at 13:17 of the first period. The Hawks caught Stonehill on a line-change and created a two-on-one opportunity. Alex Pascal (Blue Bell, Pa./Westminster School) carried the puck over the blue line and slipped a pass to King who beat Tasiopoulos for the 1-0 lead.

The Hawks made it 2-0 with under a minute left in the stanza when Mullin collected a loose puck behind Tasiopolous and swept it into the open net.

Stonehill responded early in the second period to make it 2-1. Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) won a face-off in Saint Anselm's zone and sent it back to Brendan Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) who fed it in front for Rooney who then wristed it home. Saint A's reclaimed a two-goal lead just two minutes later when Hyslip potted the Hawks' third goal of the game.

The Skyhawks refused to go away though, scoring at the 3:54 mark to make it 3-2. Sean McNeil (Canton, Mass./Canton) fired a shot at Dries who pushed it aside, McNeil grabbed the rebound and carried it behind the net before finding Harris who slapped it home from the slot.

Stonehill knotted the game nine minutes into the third period. Carey took the puck across the blue line for Stonehill and completed a give-and-go with Harris before he squeezed it past Dries to tie it up for the Skyhawks.

The Hawks would not be denied though as Tabano scored the game-winner one minute later. Saint A's would add an insurance goal in the 15th minute of the period and an empty-netter in the last minute of the game to make the final score 6-3.
