FOXBORO, Mass. (November 2, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team fell to SUNY Canton, 2-1, in non-conference action on Friday night at the Foxboro Sports Center.
Sophomore defenseman J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J./New York Bobcats) provided the eventual game-winning power play goal for the Kangaroos at 10:14 of the second period to lift the visitors to their second consecutive victory.
Freshman forward Joe Casale (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Wilkes Barre Jr. Knights) initiated the tally by winning a faceoff in Stonehill's defensive zone and fired a shot on net before Lafferty cleaned it up for his third goal of the season.
Stonehill junior forward Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./South Shore Kings) evened the score with a power player marker of his own at 4:17 of the stanza on feeds from senior captain and forward Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Williston Northampton) and freshman forward Nate Soter (Danvers, Mass./Pingree School).
The Kangaroos took an early 1-0 advantage in the first period as Nils Semjonovs (Liepaja, Latvia/NJ Rockets) put home a rebound just inside the right post, his first of the season. Sophomore forwards Bill Ousey (Fairless Hills, Pa./Philadelphia Little Flyers) and Trevor Wright (Clearwater, Fla./Rochester Ice Hawks) were both credited with assists.
SUNY Canton sophomore goaltender Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario/Almonte Thunder) turned away a game-high 42 saves including a period-high 16 in the first. Skyhawks sophomore netminder Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) made 24 saves in the loss.
Stonehill went 1-for-4 on power play chances (.250 percent) while SUNY Canton was 1-for-3 with the extra man advantage (.333).
Stonehill (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NE-10) welcomes SUNY Canton (2-2) to the Foxboro Sports Center again tomorrow night at 6:20 p.m.
