PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (February 8, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team gave up three unanswered goals in the third period en route to a 5-2 loss to Salve Regina University in non-conference action on Wednesday night at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink.

Freshman forward Chad Goodwin (Whitinsville, Mass.) broke open a 2-2 tie in the third period with three-straight goals, just four minutes and 48 seconds apart, to propel the Seahawks.

Classmate Frankie McCormick (Peabody, Mass./Proctor School) turned away 37 shots while junior forward Mike Cenisio (Milan, Italy/Curry College) and freshman forward John Scorcia (Hudson, Fla.) also scored for Salve Regina.

For Stonehill, sophomore forward Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) notched his sixth goal of the season while junior defenseman J.J. Sabin (Milton, Mass./Tilton School) netted his third marker of the year. Sophomore forward Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) added a pair of assists and freshman Dominic Sawaia (Cranston, R.I./Canterbury School) made 32 saves in the loss.

Carey opened the scoring for the Skyhawks at 6:11 of the first period finishing on feeds from Rooney and sophomore forward Garrett Lessard (East Sandwich, Mass./Williston Northampton School) for a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, the Seahawks potted a pair of shorthanded goals as Scorcia beat Sawaia at the 15:40 mark for his seventh of the year and Cenisio found the back of the net at 18:14, his fifth goal of the season. Sabin's goal came at 16:05 of the second period, on the power play, off assists from Rooney and freshman defenseman Brendan Greene (Weymouth, Mass).

It was all Goodwin in the third stanza as the first-year forward scored three unanswered goals to push his team-leading mark to 11 on the season. At 7:07 on the power play, Goodwin delivered the eventual game-winning tally on assists from freshman defenseman Kevin Kavanagh (Rockville, Centre, N.Y.) and Scorcia for a 3-2 advantage. Moments later at 8:41, Goodwin made it 4-2 finishing on another feed from Scorcia for a 4-2 lead and completed his hat trick at the 11:55 mark of the period on assists from Cenisio and freshman defenseman Cody Zweifel (Dallas, Texas/Cushing Academy).

Stonehill (6-11-2, 3-3-1 NE-10) travels to Southern New Hampshire University for a Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) matchup on Saturday, February 11 at 6:30 p.m. Salve Regina (6-15-0, 2-8-0 ECAC NE) takes on Curry College in a ECAC Northeast contest at Thursday, February 9 at 7:35 p.m.
