Ravens Use Late Third Period Surge To Defeat Skyhawks, 6-4

WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 4, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team let an early third period lead slip away as Franklin Pierce University claimed a 6-4 victory at Jason Ritchie Arena on Saturday night in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action.

Senior forward Patrick Shortt (New Haven, Conn./New Hampton School) potted a pair of goals including the final tally for the Ravens that capped a three-goal spurt in the third period while classmate Bill Sullivan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) netted the game-winning goal at 13:42 on the power play to guide Franklin Pierce offensively.

For Stonehill, junior forward Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass./Tilton School) notched a two-point night with one goal and one assist. J.J. Sabin (Milton, Mass./Tilton School) added two helpers while junior forward Sean McNeil (Canton, Mass./Canton), sophomore forward Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./) and classmate Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) all chipped in with goals.

Tied 3-3 after two periods of play, the Skyhawks jumped out to an early lead as Rooney notched his seventh goal of the season on the power play at 4:56 on assists from Gorovitz and Sabin.

Junior forward Dino Federico (Canton, Mass.) responded for Franklin Pierce at the 10:20 mark with a power play goal, his sixth of the season, to tie the game up at 4-4. Three minutes and 22 seconds later, Sullivan beat freshman goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) for his second goal of the season, also on the power play, for the eventual game-winner. Shortt notched his second goal of the contest, an empty-netter, at 19:46 to clinch the victory for the Ravens.

Shortt also opened up the scoring in the game with a shorthanded tally at 2:15 of the first period before the Skyhawks answered with back-to-back goals from Gorovitz and McNeil to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

In the second period, sophomore forward Bryan Colella (Medfield, Mass.) evened the score at 2-2 just two minutes and 54 seconds into the stanza. Carey reclaimed the lead for Stonehill, 3-2, at the 9:01 mark with his fifth goal of the season on feeds from Matthew Doherty (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) and Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial).

Franklin Pierce pushed the contest to its third tie of the night at 19:01 as sophomore forward Brandon Dennis (Williamsport, Md.) potted his sixth marker of the season on the power play.

Ravens netminder Dave O'Brien (Groton, Mass.) turned away 18 shots to improve to 3-4-3 overall. Tasiopoulos made 15 saves for the Skyhawks in the loss.

Stonehill (6-10-2, 3-3-1 NE-10) travels to Salve Regina University for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. Franklin Pierce (5-10-4, 4-3-2 NE-10) takes on Assumption College in a NE-10 contest at 5:35 p.m. on Wednesday.
