Gorovitz scores twice in loss for Skyhawks

FOXBORO, Mass. (January 31, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team dropped a 6-3 decision to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Tuesday night at the Foxboro Sports Center in non-conference action.

Senior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, Mass./Middlesex School) led the Corsairs with a hat-trick while teammates Dave McDonald (Wakefield, Mass.), Stephen Laliberte (East Falmouth, Mass./Bridgton Academy) and Andrew Pontes (New Bedford, Mass./Winchendon School) all chipped in with one marker apiece. Senior defenseman Mike Grzelcyk (Watertown, Mass./Winchendon School) added three helpers.

For the Skyhawks, junior forward Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass./Tilton School) recorded his second two-goal game in as many contests and senior forward Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) rounded out the scoring with his fifth goal of the season, on the power play, at 1:22 of the second period.

Dudley jump started his hat-trick bid with a two-goal period in the first putting UMass Dartmouth ahead, 1-0, at the 3:44 mark. Dudley found the back of the net again at 5:38 after McDonald tallied his eighth marker of the season less than a minute prior (4:47).

Greene cut the deficit to 3-1 just one minute and 22 seconds into the second period finishing on feeds from sophomore forward Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) and senior defenseman Matthew Doherty (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy).

Dudley answered with the game-winning tally at the 9:15 mark of the stanza for his 12th goal of the season. Sophomore forward Ryan Ruddock (Amesbury, Mass.) and senior defenseman Justin Pye (Medford, Mass./Bridgton Academy) were credited with assists on the score.

Trailing 5-1 in the third, Gorovitz trimmed the gap with his team-leading tenth goal of the season, unassisted, at 2:14. After Pontes regained a four-goal lead for UMass Dartmouth, 6-2, at 4:18 with the man-advantage, Gorovitz potted a Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Mass.) pass at 9:22 to cap the scoring at 6-3.

Sophomore netminder Ben Vandervies (Hanna, Alberta) improved to 3-0-0 overall on the season making 21 saves. Newly minted Northeast-10 (NE-10) Rookie of the Week, Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) turned away 17 shots.

Stonehill (6-9-2, 3-2-1 NE-10) travels to Franklin Pierce University for a NE-10 matchup on Saturday, February 4 at 7:30 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (13-5-1, 9-3-1 MASCAC) travels to Worcester State University on Thursday, February 2 for a MASCAC tilt at 5:30 p.m.
