Stonehill lets two goal lead slip away in third period

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (December 6, 2011) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey let a two goal lead in the third period slip away salvaging a 5-5 tie against Framingham State University in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Loring Arena.

Senior forward Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) led the way offensively for the Skyhawks with one goal and two assists while freshman Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Mass.) potted his team-leading fifth goal of the season and dished out one assist.

For Framingham State, freshman forward Ryan McDonald (Anchorage, Alaska) netted a pair of goals for the Rams including the game-tying goal at 10:09 of the third period.

Trailing 3-2 in the second period, Stonehill responded with three-straight goals to take a 5-3 lead into the game's second intermission. Junior defenseman J.J. Sabin (Milton, Mass./Tilton School) notched his first marker of the season at 6:41 to even the contest, 3-3, on feeds from Greene and Aufiero.

Greene took advantage of an extra man opportunity at 10:52 beating Framingham State goaltender Todd Rowley (Billerica, MA/Southern New Hampshire) on assists from sophomore Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) and junior Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass./Tilton School) for his first power play goal of the season and second total.

Moments later at 11:53, Greene returned the favor to Carey setting up the sophomore for his third goal of the season and a 5-3 advantage.

Framingham State answered in the third period as Robert Driscoll (Chelmsford, Mass.) cut the deficit within one at the 7:49 mark. McDonald made it 5-5 at 10:09 finishing on a feed from teammate Brendan McCarron (Millbury, Mass./St. John's) for his team-leading fourth marker of the year.

Stonehill netminder Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), making his first start of the season, held on to force overtime stopping a period-high 14 shots in net for the Skyhawks. On the night, Jackson made 36 saves in his season debut including one in the overtime session. Rowley turned away 28 shots with two coming in overtime.

Framingham State outshot Stonehill, 41-33, while each team went 1-for-5 (.200) on its power play opportunities.

Stonehill (3-6-1, 2-1-0 NE-10) travels to Western New England College on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. Framingham State (1-4-2, 1-2-1 MASCAC) hosts Salem State in MASCAC action on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
