MANCHESTER, N.H. (February 24, 2011) – Stonehill College sustained a 12-3 defeat Thursday evening as host Saint Anselm College piled on a dozen goals to close out the Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey regular season.

Fifteen different players recorded at least one point for the Hawks, including two goals apiece from sophomore John Hyslip (Andover, Mass.) and senior Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.), and four assists dished out by senior Nick Wheeler (Nashua, N.H.) Freshmen Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./Canton) and Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and junior Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) tallied goals for the Skyhawks, who kept it close through the first period until Saint Anselm broke the game open in the second.

The Hawks scored four times in the first 15 minutes to jump out to an early lead, but Rooney converted a power play and Carey added a goal just before the end of the period to cut the deficit to a manageable 4-2. Saint Anselm doubled up for four more in the second period, though, sparked by a pair of goals just 28 seconds apart from senior Ryan Butler (Arlington, Mass.) and sophomore Tyler Savage (Carrollton, Texas) in the third minute. Greene responded with an unassisted strike at 4:41, but sophomore Mike Richard (Derry, N.H.) and senior Paul Snell (Groton, Mass.) put two more on the board for the Hawks to open an 8-3 gap.

Stonehill was unable to challenge the lead over the final 20 minutes, managing just three shots on target in the third period as Saint Anselm’s Noonan, Hyslip, and junior Nick Rossi (Smithtown, N.Y.) combined for another four goals to round out the scoring for the Hawks.

Senior Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) and sophomore Kevin Diamond (Lakeville, Conn./Housatonic Valley Regional) split time in the net for the Skyhawks, Chapdelaine with 22 saves and Diamond with a pair. Freshman Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.) stopped 16 shots to earn the decision for Saint Anselm, and senior Kevin Fairweather (Woburn, Mass.) made two third-period saves in relief.

Stonehill (5-17-1, 3-6-1 NE-10) will look to bounce back on Saturday when they open the NE-10 postseason with a first-round matchup at Assumption College at 4:35 p.m.
