Three Skyhawks register multi-point games, but rally falls short

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 30, 2010) – The Stonehill College men’s ice hockey team gave up a second-period lead to host Worcester State University, eventually falling 4-3 in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.
Senior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) scored twice to increase his team-leading goal total to seven on the season, and freshman Garrett Lessard (East Sandwich, Mass./Williston Northampton School) netted the first of his career. Junior Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and freshman Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) each picked up two assists. Junior Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) totaled 24 stops in the net for Stonehill.
Worcester State junior Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Lancers with three points on a goal and two assists, while senior Chris Wallin (Avon, Conn.) and freshman Derek Serbon (Crown Point, Ind.) each added a goal and an assist, and freshman Brendan Galley (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored once. Sophomore Mark Evans (Ludlow, Mass.) won his first decision of the season with 26 saves.
The Lancers took a 1-0 lead near the end of the first period on a power-play goal by Wallin at 15:47, but Stonehill responded early in the second when Lessard got an assist from classmate Carey to tie it. Todesca’s first goal of the evening followed five minutes later to send the Skyhawks ahead 2-1 midway through the second period.
The Skyhawks were sunk by the Worcester State power play, though, as Asterito converted at 16:46 of the second period for the Lancers, who would wrap up the night at 2 for 3 with the man advantage. Galley got one past Jackson with a minute left in the period, and the Skyhawks trailed 3-2 heading into the second intermission.
Serbon netted the eventual winner at 8:46 of the third period with helpers from Wallin and Asterito, but Todesca came back with his second goal of the night to pull Stonehill within one. The Skyhawks had a chance to tie it when Worcester State’s Tim D’Orazio (Jamison, Pa.) was sent off for boarding to put Stonehill on the power play with five minutes remaining, but Evans stopped five of their third-period attempts to stifle the rally.
Stonehill (2-7, 1-1 NE-10) next visits UMass Dartmouth on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return to their home ice on December 7 to host conference rival Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m.
