Moreton's eighth double-double leads five Skyhawks in double figures

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 1, 2020) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 10 in the D2SIDA East Region poll, moved into sole possession of first place in the Northeast-10 Conference Northern Division standings after pulling away for a 92-71 victory over The College of Saint Rose in NE10 men's basketball action at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium this afternoon.

Stonehill takes over sole possession of first place in the NE10 Northeast Division standings with the win and Bentley University's 77-75 loss to Adelphi University in Waltham, Massachusetts, this afternoon. The Skyhawks are now a game in front of the Falcons and Saint Anselm College with six games to play in the regular season.

Will Moreton Senior, Guard: Eighth double-double of the season (27 career) with 26 points (8-for-14, 6-for-9 threes, 4-for-4 FTs), including 18 in the second half, 12 rebounds, three assists, four steals and two blocked shots.

Brandon Twitty Senior, Guard: 14 points and two assists.

Monty Urmilevicius Junior, Forward: 12 points (6-for-11), four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.

Josh Mack Sophomore, Guard: 11 points (3-for-5, 4-for-4 FTs), three rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Owen Chose Junior, Guard: 10 points (4-for-6), three rebounds.

Saint Rose

Adam Anderson Junior, Guard: 26 points (10-for-20, 5-for-5 FTs), five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Cartier Bowman Freshman, Guard: Double-double 15 points (6-for-9), 12 rebounds (six offensive) and two blocked shots.

Sekou Sylla Sophomore, Forward: Eight points, four rebounds, six assists and a blocked shot.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill pulled away late in the second half after Saint Rose had closed a 19-point second half deficit all the way to five (60-55) after an Anderson basket with 13:34 to play.
  • Saint Rose was still within seven (64-57) after a Sylla shot in the paint with 11:13 to go, but Twitty hit a three-pointer and Urmilevicius added two points to restore a 12-point cushion (69-57) midway through the half.
  • Stonehill's lead was ten (74-64) with 7:45 remaining, when it scored eight straight to seal the win, capped by back-to-back Moreton threes for an 18 point lead (82-64) with 6:23 to play.
  • Stonehill stretched the lead to 20 (87-67) with a Moreton three with 3:50 left, before extending it to 23 (92-69) after a Mack basket with two minutes to play.
  • Saint Rose grabbed a quick five point lead (7-2) with an Anderson three-pointer 2:19 into the game, before Stonehill reeled off nine-straight points (11-7), including six from Urmilevicius, to take the lead (11-7) two minutes later.
  • Stonehill went on a 15-2 run to extend its lead to 13 (28-15) after a Moreton basket with nine minutes left in the half.
  • Saint Rose was back within nine (36-27) after a three-pointer from sophomore John Smith with 5:49 remaining in the half, but Stonehill scored seven-straight to open a 16-point cushion (43-27) after a Moreton three-pointer a minute later.
  • Moreton drained another three to stretch the Stonehill lead to 17 (48-31) with 1:39 remaining in the half, before settling for a 12 point (48-36) halftime lead.
  • Moreton scored the first five points of the second half and grabbed a 19-point lead (55-36) after a Michael Boen basket off a Moreton steal a minute in.
  • Stonehill's lead was 17 (57-40) after a Boen basket in the paint two minutes into the second, when Saint Rose went on a 15-3 run to pull within five (60-55) after the Anderson basket with 13:34 to go.

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill finished shooting 55-percent from the field (33-for-60), including 10-for-19 (52.6%) from three-point range, connecting on 58.1% (18-31) in the first half.
  • Moreton moved into sixth on Stonehill's all-time scoring list with his tenth 20-point game of the season (29th career) with 1,697 points, moving past Mike Barros, '88 (1,679). He also moved into second on the program's career list for three-point field goals with 248 after canning six today, moving past assistant coach Carter Smith, '16 (243) and Ed Grzembski, '91 (247). Jon Cronin, '92 holds the school record with 308 career three-pointers.
  • Twitty moved into 27th on Stonehill's career scoring list with his 1,123 points, passing Dezmond Morgan, '05 (1,119) and Art Horan, '71 (1,121).
  • Stonehill has won three-straight and finished the cross-divisional portion of its NE10 schedule with a 5-2 record against the Southwest Division.
  • Moreton has now scored in double-figures in 20 of Stonehill's 21 games, giving him 84 career double-figure games.
