Le Moyne Holds Off Men's Basketball, 66-60

Asuncion-Byrd leads balanced Dolphins effort with four in double-figures

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (January 23, 2019) – Le Moyne College held off a rally down the stretch for a 66-60 victory over Stonehill College, ranked No. 8 in this week's D2SIDA East Region poll, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at Ted Grant Court tonight.

Senior C.J. Asuncion-Byrd led a balanced Le Moyne effort that saw four score in double-figures by netting 12 of his 16 points in the first half, finishing 4-of-8 from the floor, including 2-for-5 from three-point distance, while converting all six free-throw attempts, to go with four rebounds and two assists off the bench. Junior Tom Brown posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 6-of-10 shots from the floor, while classmate Kobi Nwandu registered 12 points, two boards and two assists. Junior Oshea Gairey chipped in ten points and six rebounds.

Junior Will Moreton scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead Stonehill with his eighth 20-point game of the season (18th career), finishing 6-for-13 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, while converting all five free-throw attempts, with two rebounds. Senior Joel Berroa was the only other Skyhawk in double-figures with 12 points, connecting on 4-of-8 three-pointers, with five boards and three assists. Classmate Michael Boen chipped in by pulling in a team-high ten rebounds, with seven points, four assists and two steals.

Le Moyne led by 11 (48-37) after a pair of free throws by Asuncion-Byrd with 13-minutes to play. The Dolphins advantage was still ten (52-42) after a layup from freshman BB Chuks-Mady at the midway point of the half, when Stonehill scored eight of ten points over the next two minutes to close the gap to four (54-50) after a Berroa three-pointer with 7:21 remaining.

Le Moyne answered as Nwandi buried a three-pointer and then added a basket to reclaim a nine-point lead (59-50) with four minutes to play. Stonehill pushed again, drawing within four (62-58) after a Moreton three-pointer with 91-seconds remaining and then pulled back within two (62-60) following a Boen layup with 11-seconds to go. However, junior Zay Jennings converted all four free-throws from there to seal the Dolphins fourth straight win over the Skyhawks.

Stonehill (11-7, 5-6 NE10) continues its three game road trip on Saturday at the University of New Haven, ranked fourth in the region, at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return to Merkert Gym on Saturday, February 2, to host Adelphi University at 3:30 p.m. Le Moyne (9-7, 6-5 NE10) visits nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
