Panthers hold Skyhawks to 49 points over final 30-minutes

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (January 27, 2018) – Adelphi University overcame a pair of double-figure deficits in the first half to claim a 97-89 triumph over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at the Center for Recreation and Sport this afternoon.

Senior Terrel Martin-Garcia (Catford, England) led Adelphi's balanced offensive effort that placed five in double-figures with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 1-for-2 from three-point distance, in 20 minutes off the bench. He also contributed five rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals for the Panthers. Junior Conor McGuinness (New City, New York/Clarkstown South) recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 assists, with seven rebounds, while classmate Tavon Ginyard (Brentwood, New York/Brentwood) tallied 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 4-for-10 from beyond the arc, five assists and three boards.

Senior Michael Coffey (Monroe, New York/John S. Burke) totaled 15 points and six boards, while junior Nick Cambio (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Cushing Academy) rounded out Adelphi's double-figure scorers with ten points on 4-of-6 shooting. The Panthers finished shooting 57.8-percent from the floor and converted 15-of-17 (88.2%) free-throws, while Stonehill shot 50% from the floor and three-point distance (16-for-32), but just 42.4% from the field in the second half.

Sophomore Dan Largey (Oceanport, New Jersey/Peddie School) led five from Stonehill in double-figures with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 4-for-7 from long-range, with seven rebounds and two assists. Senior Joel Berroa (Lawrence, Massachusetts/Bridgton Academy) added 17 points, connecting on 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, with two rebounds and two assists, while sophomore Will Moreton (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Edina) totaled 16 points, five boards, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Brandon Twitty (Randolph, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) also netted 16 points, with three assists and three steals, while freshman Owen Chose (Eden Prairie, Minnesota/Eden Prairie) rounded out the Skyhawks double-figure scorers with 14 points off the bench, connecting on 4-of-6 threes, with three assists.

Stonehill scored the first nine points of the game and held a pair of double-digit leads in the first half. The Skyhawks scored 40 points over the first ten minutes of the game, but just 49 after to keep Adelphi in the contest. Stonehill finished shooting 56.8-percent from the field in the half (21-for-37), including 13-for-20 (65%) from beyond the arc, but made only 3-of-12 (25%) triples in the second.

Three-straight three-pointers after a conventional three-point play from Moreton, before Twitty scored on a layup, gave Stonehill a 14-point lead (40-26) with 9:42 remaining in the first half. Adelphi drew within seven two minutes later after four-straight points from Coffey, but the Skyhawks answered with back-to-back threes by Largey and Twitty to restore a 13-point cushion (48-35) with 6:19 left before the half.

Adelphi responded with a 15-2 run to draw even (50-50) following two Ginyard free-throws with 2:20 to play. Largey answered initially with a triple, but the Panthers were able to head into halftime level (56-56). Largey again pushed Stonehill in front to open the second half, but the Panthers grabbed the lead with a Cambio layup and McGuiness three 1:18 in.

Adelphi continued to gain control, taking an eight point lead (80-72) with a layup from senior Doug Chappell (Alexandria, Virginia/Episcopal) with 11:12 on the clock. Stonehill was able to draw back within one (86-85) after a Berroa three-pointer with 5:30 to play, but was unable to regain the lead.

Leading by a point (90-89) with 2:55 to play, Adelphi held Stonehill scoreless the rest of the way, with Martin-Garcia driving the lane for a dunk with two minutes left and then Ginyard burying a three-pointer after a Skyhawks turnover after an offensive rebound to extend the lead to six (95-89) with 30-seconds remaining. McGuiness sealed the win with a pair of free-throws in the final seconds.

Stonehill (11-9, 7-7 NE10) returns to action on Wednesday, when it hosts rival Bentley University for a key NE10 Northeast Division battle at Merkert Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online in advance at stonehillskyhawks.com.
