Skyhawks bury 16 three-pointers to earn fourth win over last six games

EASTON, Mass. (January 23, 2018) – Stonehill College matched its season-high by connecting on 16 three-pointers on its way to a 67-52 triumph over Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium tonight.

Sophomore Dan Largey (Oceanport, New Jersey/Peddie School) and freshman Owen Chose (Eden Prairie, Minnesota/Eden Prairie) combined for 35 points and ten three-pointers as Stonehill shot 16-for-34 (47.1%) from beyond the arc overall to collect its fourth win over its last six after back-to-back victories. Largey continued his hot-shooting stretch by connecting on 5-of-9 three-pointers on his way to a game-high 18 points, with seven rebounds, two assists and three steals, while Chose netted a season-high 17 points in 19 minutes off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting from long range.

Sophomore Will Moreton (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Edina) contributed ten points, eight rebounds and six assists for Stonehill, while classmate Brandon Twitty (Randolph, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) drained 3-of-6 threes for 11 points. Senior Joel Berroa (Lawrence, Massachusetts/Bridgton Academy) chipped in with seven boards.

Junior Greg Poleon (Brooklyn, New York/Abraham Lincoln) led Pace with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting, seven rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, New Jersey/Southern Regional) was the only other double-figure scorer with ten points and six boards, as the Setters were limited to 38.9-percent shooting (21-for-54), including 1-for-16 (6.3%) from behind the arc.

Stonehill led for all but a 69-second stretch midway through the first half before Stonehill scored 13-straight points, fueled by four three-pointers, to grab an 11-point lead (23-12) after a Largey free-throw with 6:35 remaining. Chose buried a trio of three-pointers during the run, while Twitty added the fourth. Moreton drained a three to stretch the lead to 12 (26-14) with six minutes left and then Largey capped the half with a pair of threes to send the Skyhawks into halftime with a 17-point cushion (37-20).

Pace outscored Stonehill 8-1 over the first four minutes of the second half to close within ten (38-28) after two free-throws by junior Luke McLaughlin (Blauvelt, New York/Tappan Zee). Stonehill answered with an 11-2 run to open a game-high 19 point lead (49-30) after a Chose three-pointer with 12:29 to play.

Stonehill's lead was 17 (57-40) after a Twitty three with 7:18 on the clock, when Pace cut the gap to nine (57-48) with 4:31 remaining after eight-straight points, the final four from senior Kevin Seymour (Bronx, New York/Blair Academy). The Skyhawks held and sealed the win by outscoring the Setters 10-4 the rest of the way. Berroa sparked the closing run with a three-point play, while Largey scored five points.

Stonehill (11-8, 7-6 NE10) is back in action on Saturday when it visits Adelphi University for an NE10 matchup at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return to Merkert Gym next Wednesday, January 31, to host rival Bentley University at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online in advance at stonehillskyhawks.com. Pace (6-15, 2-11 NE10) hosts Bentley on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
