Largey leads balanced Skyhawks effort with 19 points

EASTON, Mass. (January 20, 2018) – Stonehill College used a strong start and a balanced offensive effort in picking up an 80-63 triumph over the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.

Sophomore Dan Largey (Oceanport, New Jersey/Peddie School) led a balanced Stonehill attack with a game-high 19 points, scoring 14 in the first half, on 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range, while converting all four free-throw attempts, to go with three rebounds, an assist and steal. Classmates Brandon Twitty (Randolph, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) and Will Moreton (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Edina) each added 15 points, with Twitty shooting 6-for-13 from the floor and adding a career-high matching six rebounds, with two steals, while Moreton connected on 7-of-13 shots. Senior KJ Lee (Huntington Station, New York/Long Island Lutheran) contributed 14 points, six boards and six assists.

Sophomore Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, New York/Green Tech) led three New Haven players in double-figures with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting off the bench, with four rebounds. Senior Danny Upchurch (Bridgeport, Connecticut/Notre Dame Catholic) added 13 points, connecting on 3-of-5 three-pointers, six rebounds and seven assists, while classmate Mihailo Vasic (Novi Sad, Serbia) registered 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting, with six rebounds (four offensive).

Stonehill used a 14-0 run to turn a three-point deficit (12-9) after a Rowland layup into an 11-point lead (23-12) midway through the first half after three-straight three-pointers, the latter two out of the hands of Largey, who drained a trio of triples in all during the run. New Haven crept back within five (23-18) with 7:19 remaining in the half, but the Skyhawks responded with seven straight points to grab a 12-point advantage (30-18) after a three-pointer by freshman Owen de Graaf (Beamsville, Ontario/Choate Rosemary Hall) two minutes later.

Stonehill stretched its lead to 14 (36-22) after a Lee layup, before settling for a 12-point halftime cushion (36-24). New Haven opened the second half with a 20-4 run to cut the lead to four points (44-40) six minutes in, but Twitty sparked a string of seven-straight Skyhawk points that restored an 11-point lead (51-40) with a three-pointer.

Stonehill's lead would not dip below eight points the rest of the way, using a 10-3 stretch to open a 15-point lead (63-48) with nine minutes to play after back-to-back threes from Largey and Moreton. The Skyhawks lead was ten (67-57) with seven minutes still to play, when they sealed the win with an 11-2 run for a 19-point lead (78-59) after two Largey free-throws with 3:36 remaining. Berroa sparked the run with a three-pointer, while Moreton added four points.
