Logan leads Skyhawks to eighth straight home win with 23 points

EASTON, Mass. (February 11, 2015) – Stonehill College, ranked tenth in this week's D2SIDA East Regional poll, picked up its eighth straight home win with an 86-71 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium tonight.

Sophomore Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) led five Stonehill players in double figures with 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting, including 3-for-6 from three-point range, while converting both free-throw attempts to go with six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Pierce Cumpstone (Bainbridge Township, Ohio/Kenston) came off the bench to net 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while converting all six free-throws, five rebounds, three blocked shots and a steal, while sophomore Jimmy Walsh (Manasquan, New Jersey/Manasquan) added 11 bench points on 4-of-7 shooting, and six boards. Junior Daniel Brix (Monroe Township, New Jersey/St. Joseph) contributed 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting and two assists, while classmate Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) chipped in 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting, converting all four free-throws, with four assists.

Junior Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Delcastle Voc-Tech) scored 17 of his team-high 19 points for Assumption in the second half, shooting 9-for-16 from the field (8-10 second half), with seven rebounds, two assists, a blocked shot and steal. Senior Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) added 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting with seven boards, while junior Karl Ziegler (Annandale, Virginia/Annandale) potted 14 of his 16 points in the first half, connecting on 7-of-11 shots (6-of-8 first half), with four rebounds. Sophomore Marcus Murray (Washington, D.C./John F. Kennedy) chipped in with ten points, aided by 7-for-9 shooting at the line, with six rebounds and five assists.

Stonehill shot 52.7-percent (29-for-55) from the field, including 15-for-27 (55.6%) in the second half, while connecting on just 6-of-20 (30%) three-pointers, and converting 22-of-30 (73.3%) free-throws (including 15-for-18 in the second half). The Skyhawks turned the ball over just eight times for the night and saw their bench outscore the Assumption reserves 31-4, due in large part to a combined 27 from Cumpstone and Walsh. The Greyhounds shot 47.3% (26-for-55) from the floor, including 48.4% (15-31) in the second half, connecting on 2-of-11 (18.2%) three-pointers and going 17-for-24 (70.8%) from the line.

Assumption staked out a seven point lead (15-8) over the opening eight minutes of the game after a pair of free-throws by Zenevitch. He had six points in all during that stretch, while Ziegler added four and Murray buried a three-pointer. Stonehill responded with a 15-2 run to take the lead and push it to six points (23-17) after two free-throws by Cumpstone with 7:30 remaining in the half. Logan had seven Skyhawk points during that run, including a three-pointer that pulled the Skyhawks within a point (17-16) with nine minutes to go.

Assumption drew back within three (24-21) after two free-throws by sophomore Reilly Reid (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park) with six minutes left in the half. Stonehill followed with six straight points to extend its lead to nine (31-22) after a Cumpstone jumper with 4:48 remaining on its way to a ten point cushion (34-24) following a three-point play from Cumpstone with 3:17 left.

Stonehill took a seven point lead (39-32) into halftime after a last-second basket from junior Adam Bramanti (Middleton, Massachusetts/Masconomet Regional). Zenevitch pulled Assumption back within five (39-34) with the opening basket of the second half and the Greyhounds were still within six (47-41) after five minutes. The Skyhawks reeled off seven straight points to regain their double-digit lead (54-41) after another Cumpstone three-point play 6:16 into the second.

Assumption cut the gap to nine twice before the midway point of the second half, but would get no closer as Stonehill used a 14-3 run to open a game-high 20 point lead (74-54) on a Walsh triple with 5:57 to play that all but sealed the victory. The Greyhounds closed the gap to 11 (82-71) after a Bobb-Jones layup with 57-seconds remaining, but Smith canned all four free-throw attempts in the final minute to halt the late rally.

Stonehill (16-7, 11-6 NE-10) is right back in action here at Merkert Gym on Saturday when it hosts NE-10 Northeast Divisional leading Southern New Hampshire University at 3:30 p.m. Assumption (8-14, 5-12 NE-10) visits Merrimack College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
