Porter leads Yellow Jackets with double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 13, 2015) – American International College, ranked sixth in this week's D2SIDA East Regional poll, pulled away late in the second half and held on down the stretch to claim a 79-70 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at Butova Gymnasium tonight.
Senior Marcus Porter (New Castle, Delaware/Howard) led three American International College players in double figures with a game-high 27 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, including 3-for-4 from three-point range, while converting 10-of-14 free-throw attempts. He also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to go with three assists and two steals. Classmate Bobby Harris (Berlin, New Jersey/Eastern) added 18 points, connecting on 4-of-9 three-pointers to go with five rebounds, four assists and a steal. Junior Cameron Dobbs (Albany, New York/Guilderland) contributed 16 points, two rebounds and two steals for the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) led Stonehill with his second double-double of the season (fifth career) with 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field and 9-for-11 from the free-throw line to go with ten rebounds and two steals. Junior Pierce Cumpstone (Bainbridge Township, Ohio/Kenston) added 11 points off the bench, shooting 5-for-11 from the field, to go with two blocked shots and two steals. Senior Jack Cole (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) and sophomore Jimmy Walsh (Manasquan, New Jersey/Manasquan) both added ten rebounds each, while Cole also chipped in with eight points.

Stonehill was limited to 32.4-percent (23-for-71) shooting from the field, including 6-for-26 (23.1%) from three-point range, while converting 72% (18-25) of its free-throws in the contest. The Skyhawks trailed by three at the break (38-35), but shot only 28.6% (10-of-35) from the floor in the second half, including 2-for-12 (16.7%) from deep. American International made 41.5% (27-for-65) of its shots from the field, including 9-for-22 (40.9%) from beyond the arc, and converted 16-of-20 (80%) free-throws.
American International carried a three point lead (38-25) in the halftime and then worked the advantage to ten (52-42) after a Harris three-pointer capped a 10-2 run with 13:34 remaining in the game. Junior Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) buried a triple and Walsh scored a layup to draw Stonehill back within five (52-47) a minute and a half later.
AIC followed with a deciding 14-2 run to open a game-high 17 point lead (70-53) after a Dobbs layup with 2:50 left. Porter scored seven of the Yellow Jackets 14 points during that stretch. Stonehill made one last run, cutting the gap to nine (70-61) after two free-throws by Logan with 1:35 remaining, but AIC made five of its next free-throws from there to seal the victory.
AIC jumped out to a quick six point lead (10-4) five minutes in, but Stonehill responded with a 6-2 spurt caped by two Brix free-throws with 12:30 on the clock to knot the score (12-12). Junior Adam Bramanti (Middleton, Massachusetts/Masconomet) put the Skyhawks in front (19-17) with a triple midway through the opening half. The teams traded baskets until the Yellow Jackets were able to grind out their halftime cushion.
Stonehill (9-6, 5-5 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Bloomfield College for a non-conference clash on its Purple & White Game at Merkert Gym at 2 p.m. American International (11-3, 6-2 NE-10) visits Bentley University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
