Logan nets career-high 31 for Skyhawks, but three Setters score 20-plus
PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (January 10, 2015) – Pace University got three 20-point scorers and held Stonehill College to just one three-pointer to claim a 76-62 victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at Goldstein Fitness Center this afternoon.
Pace saw three players post 20-point games in notching its first Northeast-10 win of the season with junior Kyle Pearson (Woodbridge, New Jersey/Woodbridge) and freshman Mike Demello (Mohegan Lake, New York/Kennedy Catholic) each netting 24 points to lead the Setters. Pearson scored 16 of his 24 points in the first half as he finished shooting 10-for-16 from the field to go with a game-high matching eight rebounds. Demello buried 6-of-11 three-pointers and converted 6-of-8 free-throws to go with five rebounds, three assists and three steals, scoring 15 points after halftime. Junior Shelton Mickell (Queens, New York/Cardozo) scored 16 of his 20 points after halftime, to go with seven rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) led Stonehill with a career-high 31 points (18 second half) on 11-of-20 shooting from the field, while converting 9-of-11 free-throws to go with eight rebounds, a blocked shot and steal. Senior Jack Cole (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) was the only other Skyhawk in double figures with ten points on 5-of-9 shooting with seven rebounds and a block. Junior Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) chipped in with eight points, converting all four free-throw attempts, and four boards.
Pace shot 45-percent (27-for-60) from the field, draining nine three-pointers compared to 1-of-16 (6.3%) shooting from beyond the arc by Stonehill. The Skyhawks were limited to 37.9% (22-for-58) shooting overall, converting 17-of-21 (81%) free-throws. The Setters made 13-of-17 (76.5%) free-throws.
Pace opened the second half with a 14-2 run that turned a four point halftime lead (33-29) into a 16 point advantage (47-31) three minutes in after back to back baskets from Pearson. Mickell scored eight straight points leading up to the two Pearson baskets during the run, converting both a three-pointer and three-point play in that stretch.
Pace extended the lead to 17 (55-38) with two Demello free-throws with 13:09 to play. Stonehill drew within ten (59-49) with two Logan free-throws with 9:23 on the clock, but the Setters reclaimed a 13 point advantage (62-49) with 7:49 to go after a Demello three-pointer. The Skyhawks cut the gap to eight (64-56) on a Cole layup with 2:44 still to play, but Pace got a big tip-in from junior Jaylen Mann (Youngstown, Ohio/Liberty) and then went to work at the free-throw line to seal the win. Pearson and Mickell both drained a pair from the stripe to extend the lead to 16 again (72-56) with 1:24 left.
Stonehill held a pair of early four point leads before Pace scored eight straight points, all from Pearson with a pair of three-pointers, to take a four point lead of its own (12-8) five minutes into the game. The Skyhawks regained the lead (13-12) after a Cole layup with 13:24 remaining in the half, but the Setters scored six straight, including five by Pearson, to open a six point lead (19-13) with 11:38 on the clock. Logan put Stonehill back in the lead (23-21) with 5:12 left in the half and the teams traded baskets until Pace was able to work out a four point halftime advantage (33-29).
Stonehill (9-5, 5-4 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it visits American International College at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, January 17, to host Bloomfield College for a non-conference clash at Merkert Gym at 2 p.m. Pace (5-10, 1-7 NE-10) hosts Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
