STANDISH — Former Cheverus High School basketball standout Sean Costigan has been named an assistant coach for the Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team, head coach Rob Sanicola announced Monday.
Costigan is a 2011 graduate of Stonehill College where he played basketball for three seasons and helped guide the Skyhawks to a 67-23 record with three berths in the NCAA Div. II tourney. He played his freshman season at the University of Maine.
“We are excited to have Sean join the Saint Joseph’s College basketball family,” Sanicola said in a press release. “Sean has a tremendous work ethic and is eager to become an outstanding coach. Coming from one of the top Division II programs and conferences (Northeast-10) in the country, Sean will bring a fresh set of eyes and ideas to our program.”
Costigan, named captain his senior season at Stonehill, has worked at many basketball camps and clinics the past several seasons.
“Personally I have known Sean since he was a youngster and continue to watch him develop into a great young man,” Sanicola said. “Throughout his life he has been around coaches — including his father — who have provided a foundation for his coaching philosophy. I am excited to work with Sean and help him reach his goals of one day becoming a head coach at the college level.”
Costigan played for coach Bob Brown at Cheverus and for coach David McLaughlin at Stonehill.
