NFHCA Announces 2019 ZAG Field Hockey Division II National Academic Squad

EASTON, Mass. (April 17, 2020) – Four members of the Stonehill College field hockey program have been named to the ZAG Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) NCAA Division II National Academic Squad for their performances in the classroom.

Juniors Taylor Ladue and McKenzie Woerner headline the group from Stonehill named to the ZAG/NFHCA Division II National Academic Squad for having a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better through the first semester of the year. Sophomore Elisha Brinkman and freshman Calli West have both earned a spot on the ZAG/NFHCA National Academic for the first time in their careers.

Ladue, an environmental science major with a 3.59 cumulative grade point average at the College, earns a spot on the ZAG/NFHCA Academic Squad for the second time. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll all five semesters to date, with Academic Distinction status the last two semesters for having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99. Ladue has also been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (3.20+ semester GPA) four semesters and earned the Division II Athletic Director's Association (ADA) Academic Achievement Award last fall.

Ladue, an NE10 All-Rookie Team selection as a freshman, participated in the Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program last summer, working with Kristen Burkholder, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science, to examine questions utilizing new output from a high-resolution model that emulates the movement of the subsurface nutrients in the real ocean. The study identified whether the model can accurately recreate the real subsurface conditions in the Gulf of Maine (GOM), including whether the changing nature of the inflows into the GOM through the Northeast Channel are captured.

Ladue started nine of her 17 games played for Stonehill last fall and has started ten of 52 career games through her first three seasons. She has totaled six goals and two assists for 14 points in her career.

Woerner, a chemistry major with a 3.60 cumulative GPA while enrolled in the Moreau Honors Program at the College, also earns a spot on the ZAG/NFHCA Academic Squad for the second time. She earned NE10 Academic All-Conference honors this fall and has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll, with Academic Distinction status in the fall for having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99, and Athletic Director's Honor Roll all five semesters to date. She received the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award last fall and the RC Award for first-year chemistry students as a freshman, while being named to the Dean's List four semesters.

Woerner also participated in the SURE program last summer, working in a team that included classmates Sophia Guerrara and Alex Joseph, with Pam Lombardi, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, on various chiral ligand projects. Woerner investigated triamines, then synthesized an iron and an aluminum complex to characterize the complexes and determine overall structure. Her project, Investigation of a New Class of Chiral Triamine Ligand, examined the catalytic properties of the ligands to determine reactivity, structure and selectivity.

Woerner started all 17 games as a member of Stonehill's defensive unit which ranked fourth in the NE10 and ninth nationally with a 1.19 team goals against average, yielding 9.5 shots, including 5.2 on goal, and 5.5 penalty corners per game with six shutouts.
