Smith nets seven points to match program's career scoring mark

EASTON, Mass. (October 9, 2018) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 3 in this week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, jumped out to a three goal lead in the first half and made it stand the rest of the way for a 6-3 victory over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.
Senior All-American Kacie Smith, the reigning Longstreth/NFHCA Division II Player of the Year, led Stonehill with three goals and an assist for her third hat trick of the season (18th career), with her seven point night giving her 217 points in 70 career games played, matching the program's career scoring mark set by former teammate Erika Kelly, '16. Smith is also just two point shy of the NE10 career scoring record of 219 points by former UMass Lowell standout Sammy Macy, while her 92 career goals are six shy of Kelly's program and NE10 mark.
Freshman Olivia Cameron recorded the first multi-point game of her career, adding two goals and an assist for Stonehill. Senior Carly Andersen chipped in with a goal for the Skyhawks. Senior Sara Freedman registered one save over the opening 61:10 in the Skyhawks goal, before yielding to sophomore Katie Lammando for the final 8:50.
Franklin Pierce got goals from three different players tonight, with senior Raegan Moulton dishing out a pair of assists. Seniors Rachel Lapointe and Ashley Silva, along with freshman Julianne Sacco provided the goals. Sophomore Olivia Barnes finished with three saves in the Ravens goal.

Stonehill staked out a three-goal lead, with Cameron opening the scoring 11:10 into the contest, when she directed a pass from Smith across the face of the goal into the cage. Andersen doubled the Skyhawks lead with 7:22 remaining in the first half when she knocked in a rebound on the doorstep in behind the Franklin Pierce goalkeeper for her sixth goal of the season (30th career). Smith extended the lead three minutes later with her first of the night off a counter-attack at 30:55.
Franklin Pierce pulled a goal back less than a minute later when Lapointe tipped a drive from the right side by junior Allison Collins 3:18 before the intermission. Stonehill responded with a pair of goals in the opening 3:26 of the second half. Cameron scored her second of the night and third of the season just 38-seconds in when she broke in one on one with the Ravens keeper and slotted a shot to her left. Cameron fed Smith for her second goal of the night off another turnover 3:26 into the half for a 5-1 advantage.
Silva's second goal of the year came on a tip on the left post off a drive by Moulton at the top of the arc with 15:55 remaining. Stonehill's answered 1:34 later as Smith capped her hat trick with her 15th goal of the season when she broke in, made a cut to her backhand side and chipped a shot in from over ten yards out. Moulton set up Sacco's fourth goal of the year for another tipped goal with seven minutes to go that closed out the scoring in the nine-goal game.
Stonehill (7-2, 3-1 NE10) returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Southern New Hampshire University for its Play for the Cure game at W.B. Mason Stadium at 1 p.m. Franklin Pierce (4-5, 1-3 NE10) hosts Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
