Smith adds nine points, with three goals and three assists
EASTON, Mass. (September 23, 2017) – Stonehill College rolled to its third straight win, all by shutout, with a 9-0 triumph over Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.
Junior All-American Kacie Smith (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood) continues her impressive scoring run with nine points on three goals and a career-high matching three assists, giving her a Division II-leading 46 points on the year, including 11 goals and eight assists in the Skyhawks three home games to date. The tally gives her 54 goals and 22 assists for 130 points in 49 career games. She moves into third place on the program's career scoring list, just two points shy of Stonehill Hall of Famer Caitlin Gleason '08 (132 points), and into second place all-time for goals scored, past Gleason (53), and sixth for assists.
Senior Alexandra Gerew (Woodstock, Connecticut/Pomfret School) and junior Carly Andersen (Cheshire, Connecticut/Canterbury School) each contributed a pair of goals for Stonehill, while senior Alexandria Sylvia (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) added a goal and assist. Senior Alexandra Dillon (Canton, Massachusetts/Canton) chipped in with a pair of assists.

Junior Sara Freedman (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) preserved Stonehill's third straight shutout with three saves. Sophomore Brianna Craft (Hamden, Connecticut/Hamden) finished with 14 saves in the Southern Connecticut goal as Stonehill finished with a 44-6 advantage for shots, as well as a 14-1 margin for penalty corners. Junior Kelly McCombs (Bristow, Virginia/Patriot) contributed three stops for the Owls over 19:07 of relief work.
Stonehill jumped in front in the opening seven minutes as Smith and Sylvia combined for a pair two minutes apart. Sylvia gave the Skyhawks the lead when she took a long pass from Smith and walked in one on one with Craft before tucking a shot into the right side 4:38 into the game. Sylvia then turned provider to Smith with a long pass of her own that sent Smith in one on one with the keeper for her first of the day at 6:52.
Smith set up Andersen for her first of the game at 13:42 and then scored two straight Stonehill markers to finish off her fourth hat trick of the year and fourth-straight multi-goal game before halftime. Gerew opened the second half with her first goal of the year, assisted by Smith and Dillon off a corner at 37:07. Dillon also set up sophomore Michaela Antonellis (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) for her third goal of the week at 45:39 and then Gerew added her second of the season less than two minutes later at 47:11. Andersen's second of the game rounded out the scoring for the Skyhawks at 54:12.
Stonehill (5-3, 2-0 NE10) returns to action on Tuesday, when it visits American International College for an NE10 clash at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, September 30, to host Adelphi University for its Alumnae Day at W.B. Mason Stadium at noon. Southern Connecticut State (2-6, 0-2 NE10) hosts Bentley University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
