Warriors start fast on way to shutout win over Skyhawks

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (September 3, 2017) – East Stroudsburg University, ranked No. 2 in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II preseason poll, struck twice in the opening 1:59 on its way to a 5-0 halftime lead and never looked back in notching an 8-0 triumph over No. 5 Stonehill College in non-conference field hockey action at Whitenight Field today.

Sophomore Emily Spangler (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania/Gettysburg) scored two goals and senior Sydney McCarthy (Reading, Pennsylvania/Muhlenberg) dished three assists to lead East Stroudsburg to its second win to start the season. Junior Amanda Crampton (Washington, New Jersey/Warren Hills) contributed a goal and assist as the Warriors dealt Stonehill its most lopsided setback since a 9-1 loss at Bloomsburg University in 2011.

Senior Halle Frisco (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania/Central Dauphin) and sophomore Maddie Richie (Pilesgrove, New Jersey/Woodstown) split the goalkeeping duties in the shutout for East Stroudsburg. The Warriors controlled play with 32 shots and 15 penalty corners.

Junior Sara Freedman (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) went the distance in goal for Stonehill and registered a career-high 15 saves. It surpasses her previous best of 13 stops against Saint Anselm College on October 12, 2016. Freedman finished the first half with nine saves alone and she finished the game with 248 saves in 42 career games played, moving her into fourth place on the program's career list.

Stonehill (0-2, 0-0 NE10) returns to action on Wednesday night, when it hosts American International College for a non-conference matchup in its home-opener at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. East Stroudsburg (2-0, 0-0 PSAC) hosts top-ranked Shippensburg University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
