#5 Field Hockey Tops American International, 4-1

Timmermans registers goal and assist to lead Skyhawks to second straight win

EASTON, Mass. (October 19, 2016) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 5 in this week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, scored a pair of goals in each half to claim a key 4-1 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Timothy J. Coughlin '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.

Freshman midfielder Justine Timmermans (Huizen, The Netherlands) registered a goal and assist to lead Stonehill, while senior Shea Healy (Greenfield, Massachusetts/Pioneer Valley) and junior Alexandra Gerew (Harrisville, Rhode Island/Pomfret School) each added markers for the Skyhawks. Sophomore Sara Freedman (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) finished with two saves in goal for Stonehill as the Skyhawks posted a 24-8 advantage in shots for the night, while edging American International 9-3 for penalty corners. Junior back Alexandra Dillon (Canton, Massachusetts/Canton) chipped in with a defensive save.

Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Ross (Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania/Stroudsburg) kept American International in the game with 11 saves. Freshman Georgia Barnes (Canberra, Australia) netted the Yellow Jackets lone goal.

Stonehill staked out a two goal lead with goals from Sylvia and Healy just three minutes apart in the first half. Sylvia opened the scoring on a counterattack when she took a pass from Timmermans on the right side through a defender and Ross for a quick shot into an open net 17:40 into the game. Healy doubled the Skyhawks lead 3:11 later when she converted a penalty stroke for her third goal of the year at 20:51.

Barnes pulled American International back into the game at 26:58 with a tip in near post off a pass from the right side by junior Payton Montague (Brewster, New York/Brewster) for her first career goal.

Stonehill sealed their second straight win with a pair of second half goals within a 95-second span. Timmermans added her second goal of the season with a tip in front of the cage off a pass from the top of the circle by junior Hannah Gifford (Goffstown, New Hampshire/Goffstown) at 47:42. Gerew closed out the scoring at 49:17 as she pushed a loose ball at the left side over the goal line during a scrum in front of the goal following a rebound for her fourth goal of the year.

Stonehill (11-3, 8-2 NE-10) will round out its regular season schedule with three road games, starting Sunday with a non-conference matchup at Southern New Hampshire University at 1 p.m. American International College (10-6, 6-4 NE-10) hosts No. 7 LIU Post on Saturday at noon.
