Moore and Ellis combine to give Falcons two goal second half lead
WALTHAM, Mass. (October 9, 2015) – Bentley University opened a two goal lead and made it stand in posting a 2-1 victory over Stonehill College, ranked 10th in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Bentley Field this afternoon.
Senior Becca Moore (Belmont, Massachusetts/Belmont) and junior Tori Ellis (Madison, New Jersey/Madison) each had a hand in both Bentley goals in the win. Ellis recorded a goal and assist, while Moore dished two assists as the Falcons scored twice in the second half before holding off Stonehill late for the win. Senior Meghan Talerman (Centerville, Massachusetts/Barnstable) also scored a goal for the Falcons, while junior Evelyn Schaedel (Burlington, Vermont/Burlington) made three of her five saves in the second half to preserve the win.
Stonehill held a 15-10 edge in shots and 7-3 advantage for penalty corners in the loss. Senior All-American Erika Kelly (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) scored the lone Skyhawks goal, while freshman Sara Freedman (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) posted four saves in goal.
Stonehill held an 8-5 advantage for shots in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the cage. Schaedel and Freedman both notched two saves in the opening 35 minutes. Ellis put Bentley in front with her third goal of the season when she took a corner pass from Moore and blasted the ball past Freedman 7:50 into the second half. Talerman doubled the Falcons lead with 10:14 left off a corner, with Ellis and Moore notching assists.
Kelly pulled Stonehill back within a goal with her NE-10 leading 12th goal of the season off a corner pass from junior Sarah Morse (Westminster, Massachusetts/Oakmont Regional) less than two minutes later at 61:15. The Skyhawks had two late bids to equalize the match, but a Kelly shot off a corner went wide and then Schaedel stopped a shot by sophomore Alexandria Sylvia (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) with just 21-seconds left to preserve the win.
Kelly's Conference leading 12 goals this season give her a program-record 83 goals in 72 career games played, moving within eight of the NE-10 record and good for fourth on the league's all-time scoring list with 183 points. She has also now collected at least a point in all 12 games this season and 13 straight dating back to last fall.
Stonehill (7-5, 5-2 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts 6th-ranked Saint Anselm College for a Northeast-10 matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. Bentley (7-5, 5-2 NE-10) visits Merrimack College on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
