Street, Maryland, senior goalkeeper recognized after leading Skyhawks to NE-10 Championship
EASTON, Mass. (November 24, 2014) – Stonehill College senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Maryland/North Harford) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Player of the Week after leading the Skyhawks to their second NE-10 Field Hockey Championship on Saturday.
Genovese, who earns NE-10 Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career after collecting Goalkeeper of the Week accolades for the fourth time in her career last week, led Stonehill to the NE-10 Championship last week and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She yielded just one goal in the Skyhawks two tournament wins, posting a 0.50 goals against average and .923 save percentage by stopping 12 of the 13 shots on goal she faced for the week. Genovese made all seven of her saves in the second half of Saturday's 1-0 win at top-seeded and 4th-ranked LIU Post in the title game to preserve the win and her fifth shutout of the season. She yielded just one goal with five saves in Thursday's 3-1 semifinal round win over third-seeded and 7th-ranked Adelphi University.
Genovese has started all 20 games in the Stonehill cage this season and posted a 1.56 goals against average and .773 save percentage with 5.1 saves per game (19th nationally) and five shutouts in 1,344:13. Her 102 saves this season rank seventh on the program's single-season list and she leads the NE-10 in wins and shutouts, while ranking third in the NE-10 for goals against average (9th nationally) and seventh for save percentage (11th).
Genovese has started 64 of 70 career games played in goal for Stonehill and posted a 1.94 GAA and .727 save percentage with 4.8 saves per game and eight shutouts in 4,548:23 and a career record of 46-21. Her 336 career saves rank third in program history and she is one of just three goalkeepers in program history with 300 or more career saves. Genovese has earned NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll status five semesters and Athletic Director's Honor Roll one semester.
Genovese was joined on the NE-10 All-Championship team on Saturday by senior back Emily Coholan (South Dennis, Massachusetts/Dennis-Yarmouth) and sophomore back Sarah Morse (Westminster, Massachusetts/Oakmont Regional). Both were a key part of the Skyhawks defense in front of Genovese that allowed just one goal in the two tournament wins, allowing only 6.5 shots on goal and 6.5 penalty corners per game. Coholan also chipped in with a key defensive save late in Saturday's NE-10 Championship, while Morse dished out a pair of assists, including the lone goal on Saturday, and had a defensive stop.
Stonehill (17-3, 9-2 NE-10), ranked fifth in the most recent Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, has earned its sixth NCAA Tournament bid in program history and are the top seed in the North Region. The Skyhawks have a bye to the national semifinal round to be played next Thursday, December 4, at Trager Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville, at 4 p.m. Stonehill awaits the winner of tomorrow's NCAA first round matchup between LIU Post and Adelphi.
