Canavan hat trick leads Ravens back from early 2-0 deficit for third straight win
EASTON, Mass. (October 21, 2014) – Freshman Carly Canavan (Kingston, New York/Kingston) scored three straight goals to lift Franklin Pierce out of an early 2-0 hole for a 3-2 triumph over Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.
Canavan, who entered the game with two previous goals in her freshman season, scored all three Franklin Pierce goals, including a pair in the second half for her first career hat trick to put the Ravens in front. Sophomore Andrea Fahey (Hudson, Massachusetts/Hudson) dished out an assist, while freshman Meaghan Williams (Salem, New Hampshire/Salem) kept the Ravens in touch with ten saves.
Senior All-American Emily Sideris (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) and classmate Jennifer Foley (Holden, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy) both netted goals for Stonehill which logged a 24-12 advantage for shots, including 12-9 on goal, to go with a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. Junior All-American Erika Kelly (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) and sophomore Sarah Morse (Westminster, Massachusetts/Oakmont Regional) chipped in with assists for the Skyhawks, while senior Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Maryland/North Harford) made five saves in the cage.
Foley and Sideris scored less than two minutes apart to put Stonehill in front by two goals 12:02 into the contest. Foley opened the scoring when she got her stick to a pass from the left side by Kelly for an open-net score off a breakaway 10:28 into the game. Sideris doubled the Skyhawks lead 1:34 later when she took a corner from Morse, touched the ball inside the arc and then fired in her third goal of the year at 12:02.
Franklin Pierce cut its lead in half 7:27 before halftime when Canavan knocked in a loose ball in front of the cage during a scramble off a corner after an initial shot was blocked by a Stonehill defender. Canavan equalized the match 12:58 into the second half off a pass from the left side by Fahey and then pushed the Ravens in front with just 3:07 remaining in regulation off a Stonehill turnover near midfield. She took a deflected pass and marched in one on one with Genovese and then flipped her fifth goal of the year over the goalie's shoulder and into the cage for the deciding goal.
Williams did the rest, as Franklin Pierce needed to survive a Stonehill penalty corner in the final minute. She smothered a low angle tip on the left post by Kelly for her final save of the night.
Stonehill (8-2, 3-1 NE-10) will look to bounce back this weekend when it heads to Long Island for a pair of games, starting with a key NE-10 matchup with 7th-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Wednesday, September 29, to host 9th-ranked Saint Michael's College at W.B. Mason Stadium at 4 p.m. Franklin Pierce (5-6, 2-2 NE-10) visits American International College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
