Coholan Named NE-10 Defensive Player of the Week

South Dennis, Massachusetts, senior co-captain earns honors for first time

NE-10 Field Hockey Weekly Release

EASTON, Mass. (October 21, 2014) – Stonehill College senior back Emily Coholan (South Dennis, Massachusetts/Dennis-Yarmouth) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for field hockey by the league office today.

Coholan, a co-captain for Stonehill, earns NE-10 Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career after leading a Skyhawks defensive effort in Friday night's 3-2 triumph over 6th-ranked LIU Post in their lone game of the week. She spearheaded a backline that held LIU Post junior Keliann Margiotta, the top scorer in Division II, without a point and just two shots on goal as the Pioneers were limited to four shots on goal as a team for the night.

Coholan has started each of Stonehill's last six games since returning from a preseason injury to lead a Stonehill defense which has posted a 1.88 team goals against average this season with three shutouts, limiting the opposition to 11.0 shots and 5.0 penalty corners per game. The Skyhawks have posted a 1.17 team GAA with two shutouts in the six games since Coholan has returned to the lineup, allowing more than one goal just twice in that span.

Coholan has started 45 of the 47 games she has played over her three seasons at Stonehill since transferring from Providence College. She has contributed a goal and two assists for four career points to go with a pair of defensive saves. Coholan has been named to the Northeast-10's Commissioner's Honor Roll two semesters.

Stonehill (8-1, 3-0 NE-10), ranked fourth in the most recent Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, is back in action Tuesday night when it closes out a five game home stand by hosting Franklin Pierce University for a Northeast-10 matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks hit the road for a pair of games on Long Island this weekend, starting with an NE-10 match at 8th-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday at 1 p.m., before visiting Dowling College for a non-conference matchup on Sunday at 1 p.m.
