Panthers score two in second half to pull out win
Senior Jeanette Heimerle (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) scored the deciding goal with 11:12 remaining in regulation after Adelphi trailed 1-0 at halftime. Classmate Julianne Gerbino (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) also scored a goal for the Panthers in the comeback.
Senior Lucia Vigliotti (Waterbury, N.Y./W.T. Clark) posted three saves to give Adelphi a chance at the comeback, while freshman Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) also posted three stops for Stonehill. Adelphi finished with an 11-5 advantage for shots in the contest and a 4-2 edge in penalty corners.
Freshman Jennifer Foley (Holden, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) scored the lone goal for Stonehill. Her eighth marker of the season opened the scoring with an unassisted tally at 21:28.
Gerbino knotted the score 6:18 into the second half when she forced a turnover at midfield and carried the ball in for a drive from just inside the top of the arc for her fifth goal of the season. Heimerle deflected a shot from senior Brittany Kinsley (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) past Genovese for her eighth goal of the year at 58:48.
Stonehill had two corners late in the match, but couldn't get a shot away to force overtime.
Stonehill (7-8, 2-5 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Saint Anselm College at W.B. Mason Stadium for an NE-10 matchup at 7 p.m. Adelphi (6-10, 3-5 NE-10) is on the road on Tuesday when it visits American International College at 6 p.m.
