Enaire nets pair as River Hawks remain unbeaten with key win
UMass Lowell, which posted its eighth-straight shutout victory, extended its shutout streak to 595:28 after getting a nine-save performance from freshman Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass./Harwich) for her 13th shutout of the season overall. Senior Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) stopped seven shots in goal for Stonehill before giving way to sophomore Kaitlyn Curtis (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough), who made one save in the final 5:17.
Senior Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) scored two goals to lead the way for UMass Lowell on the offensive end. Classmate Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) and junior Abby Auld (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) also netted goals for the River Hawks. Senior Liz Day (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) chipped in with an assist.
UMass Lowell scored twice in the opening 11:04 to take immediate control of the contest. Enaire opened the scoring 6:35 into the game with a shot from five yards out during a scramble inside the arc as Stonehill failed to clear the loose ball. Auld doubled the River Hawks lead less than five minutes later when she tipped in a long drive from the top of the arc by Day.
Stonehill kept the pressure on UML throughout the remainder of the first half, piling up a 10-5 advantage in shots for the stanza. The Skyhawks finished the game with a 20-17 edge in shots, but UMass Lowell put five more on target (13-9), and the hosts registered an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.
UMass Lowell sealed the win with two goals in the span of 2:09 in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Macy scored her NE-10 leading 21st of the season with a drive from six yards out on the right side off a rebound at 48:14 before Enaire rounded out the scoring with her 18th of the year at 50:23.
Stonehill (11-5, 7-1 NE-10) is off until next Tuesday, November 2, when it travels to Merrimack College for an NE-10 contest at 4 p.m. UMass Lowell (16-0, 6-0 NE-10) hosts Franklin Pierce University on Saturday at 1p.m.
